I'd go for the one without the transmission problems. There is no adjusting a hydraulic clutch. If it has a heel-toe shifter, the linkage might need adjusting. If not, stay away from that one.

JUMPING out of gear? MAYBE the shifter was replaced one tooth off not allowing a full swing.

Taste testing as the miles flow, souring as that acid grows.
And don't flirt with dirt or darkened oil, all the faster your engine will spoil.

IIRC, by '97, all Wings had the Valk transmission, and the fourth gear issue was history. I, too, suspect a heel-toe shifter or some such. Personally, I'd want a 'Wing pro to check out the low-mileage '99 to see if it really does have a trans problem. If not, I'd go for that one...

Check the shifter shaft to see that the dot on the shaft lines up with the split in the shift pedal.

Read a forum post by somebody with a 98 SE that had the 4th gear issue. The tranny and engine were beefed up those years but apparently there was a chance it could happen. A lot of wings have gone a lot of miles and no issue. Adding a shifter brace is a good idea though.

Not saying this is the case, but something to beware of: I knew a sorry piece of ******* who would disconnect the speedo cable so the odometer wouldn't work. When he got ready to sell the bike, he would hook it back up. In this guys case, it was usually crotch rockets and sport bikes, but it's hard to identify or rule out something like that unless you know another party who has firsthand knowledge of the bike. All other things being equal, I would trust the bike with 99k that's been well maintained over one with 20k that has set too long, not been maintained, and has known issues. Just my 2C.
