The 88 and 89 use 'shouldered' mounting bolts, on I think, 2 positions. The third bolt is the same as later models. You should be able to buy a couple of new non-shouldered bolts where needed, and mount the later model alternator in place.

As for the question of should I upgrade to the higher output, do you have lots of lights, a big stereo, lots of other add on electronics ? if so, yes, if your bike is fairly stock, eh. . . .couldn't hurt.

I replaced mine with the Lactrical 85 amp off Amazon last year (buy it directly from Lactrical for the warranty).
The price with shipping was right at $150 and I love the extra juice provided.
As Bluewaterhooker0 advised, you'll need to get a different bolt for your '89, but it's not a problem.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

I did the Lactrical 85A as well. Almost 2 years ago, and about 8K miles. Works great. You may find it to be a bit noisier than the OEM. Mine is, and have seen reports from others regarding more noise from high output alternators in general. You'll love the steady output to the headlights. No more dimming at idle.

Be nice to have bright headlight at idle, also no battery drain at idle, not worried about noise

Installed new lactrical alternator today, that was a tight fit. Little concerned about the new damper rubbers, looked like they were a little smaller. Saved the old ones just in case. by the way the mounting bolts weren't the shouldered ones. the old alternator was original Hitachi. Going to buy battery tomorrow
