Rattling noise on decel

Postby jcains » Sat Sep 24, 2016 11:00 am

I need some help with diagnosing a problem with my 93 Aspencade. I have owned the bike for about 6 years and do all my own maintenance.
It has 80,000 miles on it. The problem is, on deceleration there is a rattling coming from what sounds like the front of the motor. It sounds like gears trying to mesh or a chain rubbing. I live on a hill and when I go down my driveway I can hear it. It seems to happen more at low speeds but I may not be able to hear it as well at higher speeds. The oil level is good and I have not done any maintenance lately that would cause this noise. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Took it for another ride. Noise is the same in all gears, even neutral. Clutch in or out, no difference. Only on deceleration, braking or going down steep incline.

So when you are decelerating, you pull in the clutch, the engine goes to idle, and you still hear the rattle?

Yes, pulling the clutch lever doesn't affect it. I have a steep driveway if I am headed up, no noise. If I am going down I hear the rattle. In any gear, including neutral, clutch in or out. If I am on the road no noise under load. Only on decal or braking, either brake.

U-Joint ?

The angle of the U-joint would change when decelerating, braking, leaning down hill ?

Front would "dig in", and the rear would arch up ?

Unloaded, it changes the stresses withing the bearings ?

That' my amateur guess. :-(

With the help of a friend we were able to determine the noise is coming from the front of the motor. It make the noise pointed downhill in my driveway, sitting still, in gear or neutral. Pulling the clutch in while in neutral lessens the rattle.

After doing more research I believe I have the 4th gear problem that is mentioned in this post. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=34053&p=202312#p201885
Does anyone have any more information on this 4th gear problem?

Thanks for your help.

I was just about to post this exact statement - the 4th gear problem.

You can live with it, tear the engine down to fix it, or replace the engine. It will not get better, and at some point will get worse.

Do you have floorboards by any chance, or a heel/toe shifter?

Regular stock pegs and shifter. Is there any further damage that can happen, other than the noise getting louder and 4th gear going out.
No chance of transmission locking up or such I hope.

Not really, but at some point it will start jumping out of fourth (eventually fifth) gear on its own. Make sure you change your oil (and filter) regularly, as there are going to be bits of worn metal in there from the shift fork and gear.

I thought of the 4th gear issue, but thought it was confined to 4th gear only. I didn't know the grinding could be heard in all gears, and neutral. When he mentioned the downhill / uphill attitude of the bike and noise, the 4th gear popped into mind. I guess, deep down inside, I really didn't want to mention it, because of the nature of that problem.
Bummer.
Betcha, he's wishing it was a U-Joint right about now. :-(

Scott is right, the rattling gets progressively worse, my 1990 suffered the same issue on a ride home from the Bay Area. It was rattling pretty bad by the time we made it to Truckee, Ca. The only time it didn't rattle and bang was 4th and 5th gear. I rode it into Carson City and left it at my friends place and went up the following weekend and trailered it home. I purchased a used engine on eBay and am finishing up the swap on the weekends now. It's a shame because the engine ran great. If I had the time I would have split the case and fixed it, the parts are pretty expensive. I wasn't able to find a later model engine but found one out of an 89 with 80 thousand miles. The bike took a tumble and was totaled but the engine ran nice and shifted thru the gears smoothly with no noise.
Start looking for an engine unless you want to repair the one you have. Either way, it has to come out. Not a bad job really, just take your time. The engine comes right out once you get everything pulled.
