Shifter Oil Seal issue

Postby Jewood20 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 3:43 pm

I am using the tutorial to replace my shifter oil seal (thank you for that!) and I've run into a problem. The outer shaft wont come loose. It seems that the inner splinned shaft is out to far and there is not enough clearance for the outer shaft to come loose. I really have no idea what to do. Especially since it took me at least an hour to remove that stupid bolt for the out shaft!! Thanks for taking the time to help!

This happens on some bikes. Have a read starting at this post: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=19833#p108210

I had to loosen the bolts in the in the sub frame front and back plus the engine mounting bolt. I then had to use two pry bars and just barely got it off. My shifter had some extra material left after casting making harder than most. Once I got it off I ground it down so next time I can get it off without all the extra work. I added the shifter brace when doing mine.

How did you grind it down?

My first response would be carefully. :D

Actually, I had the same situation and just ground down a little at a time and checked until it worked.

Once I t was off it used my bench grinder to grind it down. I ground a little at a time and kept trying it until it fit. I don't know anyway of grinding on the bike. Unfortunately ypu will have to get it off first.

Everyone,

Thank you for all of your input! It has been very helpful! Unfortunately I was not able to change the seal myself. I just got the bike back today (after paying $145! So do it yourself if you can!) I picked it up and drove it back to work. Once parked I noticed it was leaking oil... still... It seems to be in the same general area! Any thoughts as to where this might be coming from? Its obviously not the shifter seal. I am unbelievably frustrated! Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

You say "obviously it's not the shifter seal", but that is only the case if it was done correctly.
I would take it back to where you had it done and ask them.

Looks like your valve cover seals. I have never had a wing valve cover off but on other bikes the bolts have separate seals from the cover. They are normally shoulder bolts so tightening doesn't help. I wouldn't do as anything until you get some information from someone that actually had one apart

Replace the cylinder head cover bolt seals and re-torque the bolts to 9 ft/lbs.

Like Charlie Horse said, replace the bolt cover seal. It is item #13 in the picture.

Thanks to everyone for the input! As it turns out the highway peg (which I don't believe is made for the 1500) cracked the valve cover when the bike got away from me (I was trying to park it). I got some JB weld and sealed up the crack. I made a video that I am going to post to show what I did (not that it was rocket science). Also, I replaced the valve cover gasket, which appears to be seeping a very, very very small amount of oil. So it looks like i need to re-attack that one. Thoughts? There appeared to be some kind of "glue" on the old one. I'm not sure what it was.
