Remove/install the center stand?

Postby offcenter » Mon Sep 26, 2016 12:35 pm

Hey gang,
Previous owner of my 99 GL1500 put a ride off center stand on it.
Problem is, the rear wheel is never off the ground for service.
I have the original stand and I'd like to put it back on.
What is involved in changing back to the original stand?
Do I need to remove the exhaust?
Lay the bike down?
Can anyone tell me what's involved?
I didn't see anything in the DIY section.
Thanks guys.

I put one on my 92 way back in 93 so I'm just trying to remember. But I think I had it on the side stand when I changed mine. The nut is backwards threads. The hardest part is putting the spring back on.
You cloud leave the ride-off stand on and when you want to do maintenance put a 1/2" piece of plywood on the ground and put the stand on that to raise the rear wheel off the ground

Thanks Joe, but I'd really like to have the original stand back on it.
A friend has an identical bike with the original stand and, honestly,
I had no trouble getting his up on the original stand.
Thanks for the tip on the backwards nut.
I probably would have broken it, or at least ran out of
four letter words otherwise. LOL!!

I always park my bike on the center stand, my wife bought me the ride off stand for my birthday one year so I had to put it on. But I agree with you, I like the stock one better, and like you I have no problem getting the bike on the center stand.
