Possible starter solenoid sticking?

Postby cheezemanonrye » Wed Sep 28, 2016 4:45 pm

Tried to start my 1500 after a long dry spell of no riding to make sure all was well. Couldn't get it to fire, which always takes a bit after a long dormant period. After a few times trying I let off start button but the starter continued even after shutting key off until it finally stopped and there was no power. Checked fuses, all OK. Checked Battery and discovered positive lead terminal block had melted. Took a test light across terminals and the starter pops on. pulled battery and checked voltage, all OK. Thoughts? My first time on here so be gentle on me. LOL Thanks in advance.

Probably one of the starter relays. A or B. Read this thread. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=31118

Thank You Very Much For The Info! I was thinking solenoid and realizing relay. Clears things right up. Again many Thanks,

In electrical terms a solenoid is an electro-mechanical device in which a part of it moves. A relay as Honda calls it is correct for the start system.

It's confusing because in cars, the solenoid is part of the starter that pushes the starter spline up to engage the flywheel. Once it is engaged, it closes a contact, which allows the current to flow. So technically, that solenoid is also performing the function of a very high amperage relay - but as a result people have gone on to call any relay that powers a starter motor a "solenoid", even though in motorcycles, there is no actual solenoid in use.
