Anyone know what this is for?

Postby zzr600batesville » Wed Oct 05, 2016 6:47 pm

This was attached to my old alternator. Took it off cause I didn't see one on the video I watched for replacing the alternator. Bike seems to be charging fine just wondering about this little jewel. Thanks.

Usually something like that attached to the alternator is basically a filter to suppress alternator noise bleeding into your radio/intercom/CB.
I could be wrong but most OEM alternators have some sort of capacitor installed that is usually not used on an upgraded alternator.

It looks like the previous owner was having alternator noise issues so he/she installed this capacitor to stop the noise.
I assume that it was attached with one lead to the output terminal of the alternator and the other lead was attached to ground.

That's exactly how it was hooked up. I couldn't tell any difference and I don't use the radio so no big deal to me. Actually thinking about taking all the radio stuff off.

That's exactly what it is, an attempt by a previous owner to kill alternator noise. That is a HUGE capacitor, 31,000 uF, and can store a whopping amount of power. It also looks like it might be dented/damaged. If so, you might want to carefully short out its terminals (careful, it could still have a charge, and produce a huge spark) before throwing it away. If it is fully charged and damaged, it could explode with a powerful explosion.
