Oil fitler replacement tool

Postby flw » Sun Aug 29, 2010 3:51 pm

In my Owners manual for 1500 '98 se it calls for a piece of trim to be removed to access the filter to remove it.

I can access the filter with my hand and the bolts to be removed are not there. Is is just a error in the manual? If so where can I find a small enough strap type removal tool? My standard and small auto filter tools are too big to get a tight grab on the filter. do I have to go to Honda and if not how much $$ ?

Thanks, Dan

First of all , the piece they want you to take off is the lower cowl for easier access , but you don't need to cuz you can access the filter easily , and the tool i use is a pair of pliers for oil filter , and they sell those at Canadian Tires for around $10 !!!!

My '98 GW does not need the cowling piece removed as I can insert my hand in grab the filter, including where the wrench would go around for removal.

So what cheap tool can I get to remove such a tiny filter? My standard Auto and small auto are both too big. I can get it on the filter but not tight enough.

You can get a pair of pliers at Canadian Tires exactly designed for oil filter , they're about $10 , as for ordering them online , i'm not sure you can , unless maybe the Canadian Tires website !!!!

I wouldn't bother wasting my money on one of the rubber strap type filter removal tools. I have just serviced my 1800 and my bro's Africa Twin and with both of them i couldn't budge the filter to take it off. I ended up chapping away at the rim of the filter with a hammer and small chisel in order to release it. Putting the new filter on I was able to use the strap a bit then but it still wasn't very effective.

Try getting the socket type removal tool that fits over the end of the filter and you can put a socket or spanner over the end and remove it that way. Less chance of damaging the bike engine casings then.

What bolts would you be talking about?
I know of no bolts to remove to change an oil filter.
