It Just Quit!!!

Postby BuilderBob1951 » Fri Oct 07, 2016 10:31 pm

Had a wonderful day riding the 1998 Gold Wing 1500 SE. Heading home up 75 (Florida) south of Tampa when the bike just plain electrically quite. Thankfully I was a to get off to the side before being run off the road. Everything electrical was on - lights, gauges, etc. When I went to restart the bike - nothing!!! The only thing noticeable was when I went to hit the start button, the head light went dim. But again nothing engaged...no starter, etc.

It cost me $500 to have the thing flatbed to the house. Once home I checked the battery (new), fuses (both of the main and accessories), the angle switch under the passenger seat (gave it a sharp rap) and its connection, and even called a local dealer for ideas. I'm not ready to haul it there yet!

I guess my question is this, anyone have any other ideas/places to check before I have to spend money on a service and parts bill?

Would appreciate your help and suggestions. PS...yes... the emergency switch on the handle bars is in the run position. Thanks... :D

I would try to check one by one these...
- battery test, try with another to be sure it's not battery related
(emerg.switch just cuts ignition, starter should work normal)
- all dash lights come on when you turn power on?
- if testing starter itself, it spins?

Then next to understand is what can cut power off, does not allow to start... Something with gear switch, fuses/relays...??

Check the kill switch. Years and miles of vibration at the handlebars will cause the connector screws underneath it to loosen and then you will have no power to ignition or fuel pump.

Not on the 1998, 1999 or 2000. The starter will not engage if the RUN/STOP switch is in STOP or internally open.

That would be the first place I look if it were me.

Thanks for all your replies to this problem. I did purchase and install a new safety angle safety switch as suggested by some of your posts and the Honda shop - got it through E-bay. I thought for sure that would be it - NOPE!!! I have checked the battery, metered all the fuses include the main fuses by the battery and under the seat. Still nothing when I hit the start button. The one thing I did find while metering the fuses is that the heavy fuse/link fuse under the seat has no voltage running through this circuit. The question then is this - what switch, relay, electrical component, etc. would cause this circuit to be open?

Thanks everyone for your insight and suggestions

Silly question; did you check the connections under the kill switch? It only takes a couple of minutes to separate the switch halves, two screws, and check the two connections; again, two screws, and check for 12 volts on both sides of the switch.
