Name that tune!! No really... What is this mystery noise??

Postby Jewood20 » Mon Oct 10, 2016 9:18 pm

So my 1992 GL1500A makes this sound after a ride. It doesn't matter whether it is a short ride or a long ride. And it's not just once. It's multiple times. I'm not exactly sure how long it continues to make this noise. But I have no idea what it is. Thanks for your help.

I tried to upload a video but it wouldn't let me. Here's a link

Sounds like your fuel cap vent is restricted and building up more pressure than it can hold and then it bleeds off pressure until it can seal. Try cleaning the cap or replace it. Next time it does that remove the cap and see if it has pressure. That will tell you if that is what it is.

Not to sound to terribly dumb, but when you say fuel cap you are referring to when I put gas in the tank I open the "fuel cap" so I can insert the fuel pump.

Yes, that is the one. Unlock the fuel door (with your key). Open the fuel door,(lift it upward). Remove the fuel cap by rotating it counterclockwise and listen to hear if the pressure escapes from the fuel tank when it is making that noise.

Is it doing that all on its own? Or when you switch the ignition on?

I think it's a trick and whatever he's holding in his hands that's making the cardboard on the floor move is what's making the noise.....

No, really. Your camera is on a tripod. Are you using a wired remote for it or something?

Bike is either possessed or a dying water buffalo in the tank.
I'd go for the latter and let it out. Stand back, he's gonna be PO'd and HISS at you.

;) .. .. Disassemble the fuel cap and clean.

The reason I asked is because if it is doing it for a second or two when the ignition is turned on, it could be failing bearings in the fuel pump, which is run for a second or two when the ignition is first switched on.

Spiral, I'm using my iPhone 6s. I have a cheap little tripod with an attachment for an iPhone. You can search amazon for them. I think I paid like 4 or 5 bucks for it.

It was the water buffalo! Who knew? haha

I'n all seriousness I did what Charlie suggested. As Soon as I got home and turned of the bike it started making the noise. Following Charlie's directions to the "t" :-)! As soon as I opened up the fuel cap a ton of pressure was released. I'm going to try and clean the cap. If that doesn't work I will replace it. Thanks to everyone for ALL of their input! I'm learning a ton about this GW.

I've been watching this post for a while now to see what the answer might be because I have experienced the same thing on several occasions with my '99. However my noise has not been as loud as original poster's was. It has not happened lately. When it happens it is right after I shut it off after a ride. To me it sounds like an electrical noise of some kind. I will continue to monitor this post with great interest.
