Tires

Postby Logroq » Sat Oct 15, 2016 9:11 am

Hello to all!

I'm a first time GoldWing owner and have a question about tires. I just bought a 2000 GL1500SE and I need to buy tires. The one on the front is a "low profile" tire and I'm not sure I like the way it rides. I'm used to more if a rounded standard tire that was on my Harley. Is there a good reason to stay with the low profile or does it really matter for this bike?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Stock tire size is 160/80-16. What size is yours? "Low profile" doesn't tell much. Dunlop, Avon and Bridgestone among others all make a tire for the Goldwing in that size.

Stock front tire size is 130/70-18
What tire you got on there now and what is that you don't think you like about the tire on there now?
You want to keep the front inflated to at least 38 (preferably 40 PSI) for better handling and longer tread life

When both tires are low profile, this will lower the overall height of the bike. This benefits short people.

If the rear tire is stock size and the front a low profile, that will change the steering rake angle slightly.
This steeper rake will make the bike feel twitchier or some might call it 'power steering'.
If you always keep at least one hand on the grips you will be OK, if not it can go into a death wobble.

Also low profile tires lends to easier rim damage since there's less distance from road to rim.

And don't flirt with dirt or darkened oil, all the faster your engine will spoil.

Currently my bike has Dunlop tires on it. What I want to know is which style if tire do riders prefer and why, regular or low profile?

I didnt know there was a low side wall option. Have been riding on regulars. Trying Avon Cobras at the recommendation of others. If they ride like Venoms I should be very happy.
