I don't know your answer, but I have the same problem on a '91 so I am interested as well, I thought that it was mechanical? I bought a "junker" off of ebay, and was going to take it apart and look at how it does work, because it came off a 91 as wll and the door is stuck on it. If I find out anyhting, I will let you know. :? :?

I got a response from someone on another site, that just "popped" his open with a small screwdriver, don't see how but my response is below

After taking the "junk" radio apart that I bought on ebay, which was advertised as "works great, but cassette door stuck closed" what a joke that is! The radio was beat up and someone had already broken the hinge on the door, (looks suspiciously like a "small" screwdriver attack) I found that the door is actually opened by a lever that is connected to the mechanism that ejects the tape as door is opened, and the lever is activated by an electomagnet, that when energized will pull the lever up, unlocking the door. So the question now is where does the power come from?

I have the '91 se which the door won't open on, and I have an '89, that the door does open on, so I just tried opening the '89 with the ignition turned off and it opens, so there is power available to the radio, all the time?

I really don't use the cassette player, but now the curiosity is alive and well, and to tell the truth, after messing with the junk radio, I think that your "angel" must have helped open that door with the screwdriver, because I couldn't open the junk radio with a screwdriver, and someone had already broken the hinge on top witha screwdriver.

another comment was to check the "backup" fuse 5 amp left side rear, just below the seat, didn't help me though, my fuse was good, and I think my 89 is mechanical, not electrical

I will try the 5 amp fuse and let you know . . .thanks for all the input. A little nervous about prying it open though. Barry

After looking at the mechanism, door latch on my 89, which appears to be mechanically operated, I can see the door latch move as I press the button, and it is not much of a latch, goes up and down through a slot in the door, but I tried the screw driver on the junk radio and could not get it to unlatch, the 91, I can see is electrically operated, once I took the radio apart, I haven't tried anything on my "working" radio on the bike, except check the fuse. I went to my docs on the 89, and looked at the electrical diagram, the door is not mentioned, in it, it might be on the '91, which I don't have.

Maybe some one will come along, with more info, surely someone else has had this issue.

I have a GL1500 that had the cassette door stuck. When you press the release does the release make a noise? If it does ,hold down the release and gently pry up the cassette cover with a screwdriver. Maybe I was lucky when the release operated.

Went back to try the door again, could hear a faint "whirring" noise, and I used my fingers to pull up gently on the cassette door, and it did open, but when I tried to insert a tape, it would not go in, so I am assuming that there are more issues, with the player, next time I have the radio out, I will look further, anyway thanks for your post, I do know two things about them now, the old "89 is mechanical, and the "91 is electromechanical.

:D :D

Okay, I will give it a try - Barry - I will let you know, I am afraid if I pry it open the tape still won't elevate out.

Ben
Make sure there isn't a tape stuck in the player.
