Those using a non-motorcycle GPS on a GW 1500

Postby flw » Sun Sep 05, 2010 9:43 pm

If you use a non-motorcycle gps for your GW, what do you use to mount it to the bike and where did you get it and for how much?

Please note the make/model of your gps for reference please.

Thanks Dan

p.s. I have a GL1500 that I would be using it on.

I am using a Tom Tom 630 on my 1500, I have a home made bracket that is velcrowed to the cover infront of the fuel door,
I will try to post a picture when I get home. I have it at an angle so the glare from the sun is mot so disruptive, Plugged into a power plug, I have used it on several long trips, 800+ km and it works great

Dan, I use a TomTom One on my GL1500.

I had it mounted on a sticky mount just above the gas tank door. I didn't like it there. Too low to see well when riding.

I bought a 1 inch stainless steel U bolt with mounting ball. Attached it to the left handlebar next to the clutch reservoir. Had to trim just a little of the handlebar cover to make it fit. I use a double female mounting arm that attaches the ball on the handlebar to a ball on the back of the TomTom bracket. All parts were from www.gpscity.com. Look at their site & they'll give you lots of ideas & options.

The gps is much easier to see mounted on the handle bar.

I use a Magellan Roadmate with a handlebar mount from my VTX. BUT I don't use the U-bolt. I mount it on the left side to a screw under the pocket flap and through one of the holes for the U-bolt. Works pretty good.

I use a tomtom go520 and after sufferring it falling of the suction mount on the screeen, I have mounted a small suction mount with a bolt fixing drilled through it onto the top of the dash above the clocks. That is on my 1800 as the 1500 kept the suction mount on the screen no problem.

I use a Magellan 4040 and mounted the cradle to an old Bike Buoy frame on the handlebars , mounts to the clutch or brake housing nuts.... always accessible and easily read. if it rains throw a baggie on it.

I have a tom-tom go 720 and am using a RAM mount I got from www.gpscity.com I have mine mounted on the left handlebar and it works pretty well. Just have an issue with not being able to read the display in the sunlight.

I use Garmin 2730. It's waterproof, has mp3 which I play through a cassette adaptor which also allows me to hear the turn by turn instructions and that's important because you have to be aware that no matter what gps you get, it's gonna be hard to always see the screen especially in bright sunlight, but it has a big screen and I really love it. Ram sells the mount for them, about $35 I think... I can't remember. Been using it for 5 years now.......
