Replacing light bulbs in the speedo and tach housing

Postby Roger3333 » Tue Sep 14, 2010 2:46 pm

Can anyone give me some foresight on how to go about replacing the light bulbs in the speedo and tach housing? From what I can tell this is going to be a real pain in the butt for a few light bulbs.

You're right! It's more than a pain in the butt!! I did mine a couple months ago. It took 2 days. You have to literally year the front end apart. Remove the covers from the radio, the mirrors, and on and on and on. Then you get access to the dash. got mine out... There's a bunch of bulbs in there. I think it cost me about $35 in bulbs.

Some of them have colored rubber over the bulbs, like mini condoms... I didn't replace those. There's no difference in the lighting without those than there was with them....

Take pictures of it as you take it apart so you'll remember how it went back together. I have a file I could send you that might help. It gives you and exploded view and I think it also tells you step by step how to do that and just about anything else you want to do on the wing. I didn't use it because I'm mechanically inclined and can fix just about anything...... But if you want it, email me your email addy and I'll send it to you........

I'd be interested in that literature about changing bulbs on the GL1500, if it's no trouble.

Thanks!

Replaced the light bulbs in my dash in the spring..................BIGGGGGGG job but well worth it. Unlike a previous poster, I replaced the bulbs which were coated with a rubber like coating as well. Dash much brighter but not so bright that it ruins your night vision..............much better for my tired old eyes which couldn't read the speedo or tach at night 'cause the lighting was so poor.

One tip............consider replacing your front speakers at the same time as you have the dash apart if they haven't already been replaced. Murphy's law dictates that a speaker will blow on ya shortly after you reassemble the dash and you will be repeating the process again..............yesssssss............it happened to me mere weeks after doing the lights.

Speakers are relatively cheap - I purchased mine at Cyclemax but they are available from almost any online Goldwing parts supplier and the difference in sound quality is startling (at least to me!).

Have fun, be patient and methodical and you will be pleased with the results.

T.

Another tip: Replace the speedometer cable while you're at it.... Much easier now, than having to tear it all apart again later....
