GL1500 G8MS-H30 Relays back in stock!

Post by WingAdmin » Mon Jun 26, 2017 10:02 pm

I'm very pleased to report that after months of work searching, testing, discarding and starting over again - twice - that I once again have replacement GL1500 relays in stock.

The original Omron relays became unavailable at every distributor months ago, and repeated inquiries to Omron produced "sorry, we're no longer selling that product outside of the OEM channel."

I started hunting for a quality replacement, talking to factories around the world. Twice I ordered samples, and when I put the samples through a battery of tests, they failed miserably.

Finally, I found a manufacturer that made a quality relay. Rated at 40 amps (the original OEM Omron was rated at 20 amps), it passed every test I threw at it with flying colors.

Image

The relay internals are solid copper, with silver alloy contacts and a very strong spring. This relay is built to take vibration and shock and just keep on working. Measured coil resistance is 87 ohms, and measured current draw is 159 mA - almost identical to the OEM relays.

I hooked up a 60 amp load to this new relay (20 amps more than it is rated, consisting of thirteen 55-watt H3 halogen bulbs), and started turning it on and off five times a second for a 100,000 cycle torture test that lasted for over two days. Afterwards I disassembled it to check its internals - and it was in new condition! Virtually no pitting on the silver-alloy contact surface, and no issues with the spring or mechanicals.

Image

I tested this relay up to 150 amps (after one second it started to melt the plastic housing and smoke), yet it still kept working, with very minor pitting on the contacts.

Confident that this relay was equal to or better than the original OEM relay, I ordered a large quantity of them, and that order has now arrived.

The relays are now available in the GoldwingDocs store: Goldwing GL1500 G8MS-H30 Relay

Would these relays fit in the '85 LTD that has 7 relays in the fuse block? My thoughts are that these should.

Cheers

I'm not sure. They look similar, but without seeing the base of the relays used in the LTD, I can't say for sure.

Took pictures of the cornering light relays and system relays. They are slightly different. I don't think the ones you have will fit the fuse block. Here are pictures of the two relays - blue are the cornering light relay and the black the remainder.

First the fuse block orientation:

Just wondering if these relays might be usable on an 85 GL1200L. I think I have a bad relay and need something that could work.
Thank you for your assistance.
