Reverse Lever on Gl1500A 1999

Post by n9nzh » Tue Aug 01, 2017 9:32 pm

I have notice on the bike lately that when I go into reverse and start backing after 30 seconds or so the bike shuts off and the battery is low but if I don't use reverse at all the bike run great. ( Battery stays charged ). Check battery connections tight and secure. And suggestion on the cause ? ? Gl1500A 1999

The reverse system draws a lot of current, but the ignition system not that much from the battery. And if you are using the OEM alternator it will not charge the battery at idle.

So, the problem is probably at the battery. What kind of battery do you use? How old is it? Do you check its acid level? Do you use a battery tender to keep the battery charged when the bike is not used?

Battery is three months old, had it checked they stated perfect. The alternator is at 11.4 at idle, 1000 rpm it's at 12.1 ? Could it be the Alternator ? ?

12.1V @ 1K RPM, yes you have a battery charging/alternator output problem.
This is what I do

Also, note that any loose or corroded contact will create resistance that drops the voltage.
So, check the battery terminals for that and 55A fuse for any hidden crack order the bolts.

And, new batteries sometimes may be bad because of incorrect charging or something wrong in the cells.

Found the problem after some good (old ) voltage testing. It was the voltage regulator not working properly. Replace it ( RECTIFIER VOLTAGE REGULATOR RECTIFIER) and the voltage at idle is 13.30 and 1500 rpm at 14.01 volts. Thanks to all for the help. Great forum to get answers.
