Head lights Won't turn on Right Away

Postby ptj1950 » Wed Sep 29, 2010 10:47 am

I have a 1994 Honda Golwing SE 1500

Ever since I replace my old battery with a new battery my headlight won't turn on when the swith is on like before. Even after I start it the lights won't come on until I gun the throtte or leave the choke on while it warms up, approimatle 10-15 seconds.

I've checked all fuses @ relays and the new battery all check good. This is puzzling me BIG time.

When it comes on after you gun it or put the choke on - does it come on slowly (gradually coming up to full brightness) or does it come on suddenly like it was just switched on?

After I gun it or choke it - the lights come on quick & normal like it suppose too, like turning the key switch on .

I looked at the schematic for a 93 gl1200 from this site.using a test probe, the current path to operate the headlights are as follows:12 volts at these test points:Head relay fuse 5amp,brn/red feeds starter switch(the light goes off when cranking)exits starter switch blu/wh,goes to dimmer switch.exits switch white(low beam),blue(high beam).they feed the headlight relays, common fuse 15amp,relays feed the lamps direct.the best starting point is to split the system in half.probe the blu/wh from the starter switch.it should have 12 volts at rest, 0 volts when cranking, then 12 volts as soon as the switch is released. My first guess is the contacts in the switch are sticking open from hardened grease.clean and lube.Hope this helps

It could also be an old, sticky relay, that doesn't click on until the voltage rises a bit when the engine RPM rises after start.

It has 2 relays, one for low beam one for high beam.swap the relays or test by starting the. Bike and fliping the dimmer switch.the relays should click on and off.this test will eliminate switching defect at the dimmer or starter switch.

Thanks for info - I'll check my schematic for 94 g1500 & get back.
