Speedometer stopped working

Postby pan2xx » Sun Oct 10, 2010 3:31 pm

Hi Guys,
I am running a 1988 GL1500 GL with 95000 miles on the clock.
I rode 160 miles yesterday with no problems at all, however today whilst out for a poodle about I suddenly noticed my speedo had stopped showing the speed and the needle was no longer working, I stopped but could not see anything obvious like a loose cable, so I reset the trip meter and completed my journey which was recorded by the trip meter (some 13.6 miles).
Can anybody shed any light on this ?
If the speedo cable was damaged or rounded at either end I would not expect the trip meter to record anything, is it a case the needle assembly itself has become damaged?

Thanks for all help

I believe, if memory serves me right, that the trip does not work from the speedo cable. I had a similar experience some years ago and found that the cable had, for some reason, broken near the top - possibly the grease/oil had dried out.

This one is easy to diagnose - disconnect the cable from the top end, and rotate the front wheel. If the cable doesn't rotate, you've found your culprit (either the cable, or the speedo drive at the wheel - but it's usually the cable).

I've got an 82 Goldwing with 34800 Km( Canadian) similar problem.
Checked the speedo cable, It's good.
Used a cordless drill and a #2 Robertson(square head) attachment to spin the back off the speedo.
It worked intermittenly... Not sure if the speed a mechnically system or some type of inductive system??
Any thoughts... The trip reset button seems to be broken as well not sure if the 2 are connected.
Just got the bike so I don't have a whole lot of history with it.

Hi Guys, thanks for all the replies, I actually had a good look last night and when I got the wheel off the deck I believe the problem is caused by the front wheel bearing being shot! this causes the wheel speedo drive from moving out of alignment. Well all I have to do now is get some bearings (I hope)

Glad you found the problem before the bearing collapsed and caused some other more significant problems!! :)

I had the same problem. First the speedo recorded the speed at 15% below what I was actually doing, so not realizing this, I thought everyone around me was being a slow poke, so I passed them well above the speed limit in a major city! Lucky me. No cops saw me!

Turns out, it was the cable. It's all fixed now. Did it myself..... It's not hard.
