92 1500 engine swap

Post by Irondoc » Wed Nov 01, 2017 12:12 pm

Hello everyone, this is my first post but I’ve been reading some good info on this forum for a year. I have a1992 1500 with reverse and I have the transmission shift fork issue. I bought the bike with noise . I want to either rebuild or replace complete engine. How can I find out what engine I can use for replacement. I see some on eBay but I’m not familiar which engine would work. Can someone help me on engine configs that can be used ?

I believe any 1500 engine will fit but I would get the latest one with the least miles you can.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.

in 1997 Honda installed the much better transmission from the Valkyrie, so '97 thru '00 are the best ones to get a hold of.

There might be some minor carb issues between 92 and 97, don't know.

but all of the engines will mechanically fit in place. stay away from the '94 models, they have a history of being more prone to the shifter fork problem, for some reason.

I owned a '94SE and it would occasionally go into a false neutral if I got sloppy with the shifting between 4th and 5th.

you don't want to try and overhaul the 1500, there are only two examples that I am aware of that have been done. it is not cheap, and new parts are made of unobtanium.

If you have reverse now, then you will want to make sure any engine you buy also has reverse. Just about anything else that may be different between year models can be swapped easily.
