WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Post by Jonesey » Thu Nov 02, 2017 3:30 pm

Just finished winterizing my 1995 GL1500 and added a cord for the trickle charger. Tried to start the bike and it just wouldn't fire up (another issue) All of a sudden, with my radio and intercom turned off, my speakers started cranking out full volume static. I played with all of the switches thinking it might be a dirty contact, but nothing seems to work. Can the trickle charger be causing the static? I've unplugged it and still have the problem. Anybody, where do I start?

Thanks!

Did you swap positive onto negative on the trickle charger to the battery? That would fry the electronics of the ECM and the radio amp which would be the static you got.

Very first thing you should have done is to disconnect the negative battery terminal.

No - didn't swap and fry anything. The radio still works if I turn it on, just hard to hear with the other static.

I'm not understanding your comment. Are you saying that the trickle charger negative should be the only wire connected to the battery for the winter? I've had charger cords on several bikes and never had to disconnect the remaining negative wires for charging. Please help me understand. Thanks

what he meant was you should have unhook the bikes battery negative cable to remove all power from the bike
then go back and double check all your connections and make sure none of them are shorted out to anything. your new power ext could have got pinched or something like that

Yes, as aj1500 said, what I meant was that the minute all this started, you should have disconnected the negative cable to stop it all before damage occurred. I know it does not help with your static problem, but if weird power occurrences take place, the first thing one should do is remove the power. Disconnecting the negative from the battery does this. Then you can examine what is going on and decide if there is or was a short or misconnection.

I don't know if this could in any way be something, but something like that happened to me after I had cleaned up my bike. Somehow I turned on the cb with squelch down and volume up and yep, that sound is about what you mention. Took me quite a while to figure it out. I thought I had major electrical problems. I couldn't see the light of the CB radio because of the bright sun and those knobs work independently from the main radio. It may not be your problem but, it could help someone here. Seems like the simple things we do sometimes that causes us to remove all sorts of Tupperware and trace wire after wire and retrace every step we did just to find out it was just a flip or turn of a knob.......we realize then, "Aint getting those hours back now am I ?!"

LOL I did just the opposite with mine. I bumped the CB with my knee, turning it on, but had the squelch all the way down AND the volume all the way down too, so I lost all sound until I glanced down going through a tunnel and saw the CB lit up. Turned it off and got my stereo back.

Is there more than one location for keying the CB? All of the knobs on the radio console appear to be off. Is there another control on the left grip?

Just got this bike and have never played with the radio, intercom, or CB.

Well, I have no idea what happened but I tried starting the bike on Saturday to complete the winterization and it started right up, no static, so I guess I fixed it! ;) Thanks to everyone who responded!
