Alternator Not worky!

Postby Fingers » Sat Oct 16, 2010 10:02 pm

Just drove over Dragon's Tail in TN and my 1999 Goldwing SE lost electrical power & died!
Would start after a minute or 2 then die again.
Brought It home & replaced the 2 "brushes" in the alternator today and still will not charge battery when engine is running!
What could be wrong or what should I look for (besides a mechanic)???

This may sound silly but try the Cruise control fuse. When blown this stops the battery charging.

There is also the main dogbone fuse which can look good but have hairline cracks that will lose connection when it heats up.

It doesn't mean that changing the brushes is enough , your stator just might be grounded , i would have it checked by a certified technician !!!

As Lebouc stated, there's more than just the brushes. The alternator consists of brushes, stator, rotor and internal regulator. Any, or all of these could be bad. Also, maybe a bad battery?
