best tire that has long life and best ride

my tire gave out on a long ride across the state doing a escort. not sure why it gave out but was sure lucky I caught it. wondering what others have used since I load it down heavy and want input as to what others have used and had good results. wanting a strong tire but having trouble finding much of a selection.

Your right the selection isnt that great. Sounds like you might be a candidate for darksiding. Ive never tried it but from your description it might be a good fit.

Looks like another Metzler delaminated. (?)
Dunlop Elite 4s have one of the highest weight ratings for a Moto tire and decent mileage. Not sure how the 4's ride as they are fairly recent and I have never tried, only the E3's, which were my go to tire.
A darkside tire will get you a very high weight rating, usually exceptional mileage (compared to a Moto tire), but some of them do have handling 'quirks'

Another possibility in a motorcycle tire would be the Avon Cobra. It is a good tire I have been using. They run quiet with good traction. It is a little higher load rating than the Elite 4 (1019 lbs vs 992 lbs for the E4).

Was that tire out of its date range ?
Just curious what may have lead to such a failure.
I use the OEM Dunlop K177 tires. On my second set. They perform for me. The weight specs are less than others.

Your experience is not unique - Metzeler tires are WELL known for exactly this kind of failure. They have known about this problem for YEARS, and refuse to admit to it or do anything about it. There have been many threads on the site about people who have had their Metzeler tires fail in exactly this way, for no reason at all. Their tires are simply not up to the task of handling the load our bikes put on them, despite what their load ratings say.

There are a few options, but my personal choice (going back many years and many sets of tires) are Avon Cobras. They are smooth, long-wearing, resistant to cupping, and reliable with heavier loads.

On Goldwings, I have only run Dunlop tires, getting the latest version as they were made from the old K-177 or whatever that one was thru the E3s

My front E3 is almost used up, I am contemplating getting an E4 next spring for it.

I would much prefer though to have a water shedding tread design in the middle of the tread.

I ride more close to a 600+ miles a week and live in the Atlanta, Georgia area. The Heat here is crazy hot and I also travel on about 40 miles of grooved pavement a day, which eats tires like crazy!! I have been riding on the Dunlop E4 for close to 20K miles and have 1 summer on them and they look and still are riding like they have another 4000-5000 miles left in them. I like the way they feel and seem to be much better than the e3 ever was. The E3 would dissolve in the summer heat, when the temp would be in the 85-90 range, they would loose tread so fast it was crazy, I had what I thought good to great tires in early July and by early august, I had threads showing. The guy who changes my tires, was very upset that I drove the bike with the tread down to threads!!! I didn't try to, it was the heat and the grooved pavement. So I put on the E4 and have been a good year on them and they still look good for a few more months. I will also say the E4 track very well in the rain. I ride all weather and have never been afraid to corner on wet pavement with them. They just stick to the road and are super smooth. I also think quieter than the E3, which were very loud!!!

another good report on the E4 tires....

you call 85 to 90 High Heat???

that is just luke warm for where I used to work and live......
would wake up in the summer months from middle July thru October, and the dawn temps were in the middle 90s and sometimes even at 100+.

I recall one summer that we had 110 days straight, of 100* heat at night.... with day time temps of 118 for about two weeks....

Maricopa County, Phoenix AridZona..... worked there for 20 years. and rode the bike to work and back nearly everyday.

time to go home? walk in shower, get T-Shirt wet, put on Mesh Riding jacket and go....
ATGATT with helmet and gloves and boots, the lace up kind.

This happened 5 minutes after I got off work in downtown Phoenix.

Well, okay is a matter of a state of mind.

3 concussions resulted in a loss of the ability to control my body's core temperature.
so, I have to dress up more to stay warm, or find air conditioning if it gets over 85*

Memory issues, now where did I lay that thing down ??
my version of a conversations does not seem to match what others think they heard??

I gained a tiny bit of money from the settlement. Trucking companies are jury rigged so that they never have to pay out much.... in this incident, there were 3 liable trucking company parties. note it is a leased truck.

all of them had the same exact insurance policy, and each of those stated that none of them would pay a dime until after all other insurance sources have been exhausted. and each of them has the same exact $1 million dollar liability value.

Lawyer got 34%
their lawyers got 25%
and I got the rest, somewhere around 440 thousand IIRC, been a long time, and memory issues. did I mention that?

I took the payout and bought a new home in cash where we live now....
retirement pension covers the bills and leaves a little bit to play with.

I will never be young again, but I'm almost 75 now, and still riding.

John, that a crazy story, Sorry it happened to you. I hate Lawyers!!! I think we all do, but you can't do much without one either!!! Your a Blessed man, to not only survive a BIG Rig vs. Motorcycle accident, but still able to ride is surely a blessing!!!

My vote is for the Michelin Commander II. This tire has served me well for two sets. My average miles on them are 15-18,000. The difference is that on the first set I got antsy and replaced the tires because I was a little paranoid, but I learned. I ride heavily loaded as my trips are long term and I pack a lot of bike supplies for emergencies, repairs, cleaning and covers. Leaving and returning to the Phoenix area mostly involves high temperatures but I have not experienced issues because of this. A few reviewers have said this tire has poor traction, not me. Some have said it rides poorly, not me. Someone will have to build one heck of a tire to get me out of these! Good Luck to all. (My bike, 2008 abs 1800)

My experience with Metzlers was with them on a BMW K1200LT that I bought between my GL1500 and GL1800 a couple of years ago. Don't yell at me guys but the K1200LT had lots of options, one of which was an electric center stand an option I still wish I had! The K1200LT was about the same weight as our GLs and the Metzlers wore quite well but...... I bought a nearly new Metzler 880 from another member in Ohio as a backup tire and when I looked at it closely on the sidewalls it looked like the rubber was distorted somewhat and a definite line all around the sidewalls. In some of these areas there were what looked like small, tight slits where the rubber had separated. I was still riding the BMW but went to a local Honda dealer that sold Metzlers I had dealt with and they agreed the tire looked defective. The sent it back to Metzler and they sent me a new tire, agreeing it was a manufacturing defect. I put the new tire on the bike and sold it shortly after that, then bought my GL1800. The same "manufacturing" line was on the new Metzler 880.

I ran Dunlop E3s on my GL1500 and got great mileage out of them as well as handling as long as I kept the tire pressures up. Before I sold it I had 18,500 miles on the front and I estimated at least another couple of thousand local miles left on it. My GL1800 has E3s on it but haven't ridden it long enough to wear any tires out. I would definitely go back to an E3 for the 1800 or to the E4s.

Yes I love the GL1800 and would never consider going back to the BMW. It is my 4th GL and like the GLs very much!

Happy New Year to All!! Mounted Dunlop E4's May 2017 on my 2010 GL1800. Maintained 42 psi both tires. Ride single but fully loaded for long tours. After 11,000 miles this past season my evaluation is:

1. Tires show very little wear, expect many more miles.
2. I live in NW Ohio and often travel South to ride Blue Ridge, WV, and also ride Northern Michigan, so good combination of interstate and twisties.
3. Tire has handled VERY well in all conditions i.e. wet/dry, hot /cold for senior rider keeping it under control as conditions dictate.
4. The E4's replaced E3's and my thinking is a nice improvement, but that may be due to new versus old tire.
5. At this point Dunlop has a winner with the E4. Will update post after second season.

Longer days and warm weather ahead.

I'm riding on Elite III's (2003) - they handle wonderfully (and don't let me down if I encounter wet, but I usually try to avoid that), but the road noise is pretty loud. Naturally my solution is to use earplugs and turn the volume up on the stereo. I'm usually running only 38-39 PSI. I'm reconsidering my PSI choices based on a lot of comments about running in the low 40's.

My dad (2009) went through a set of Elite 4's this year. He expressed disappointment with his mileage, but LOVED everything else about it, including the noise - I want to say he only got 7 or 8000 miles - but promptly got a new set of Elite 4's again - not sure why his mileage is so much less than others have stated. I want to say he's also running his pressure only in the high 30's. But he's also been known to replace things way ahead of schedule. Hates doing tires at separate schedules, so if front wears faster, even if rear has another 4,000 to go, he'd rather replace whole set.

I would say his ride is a mix of interstate hauls for 2 hours plus, then winding his way back through back roads for another 4-5.

We ran E3s on our 2001 GL1800 before putting a Michelin Alpin high performance winter snow tire on the rear. It is a run flat. (Do you know Dunlop makes a run flat motorcycle tire but will only sell it to law enforcement agencies)? Then we put a Bridgestone Battlax BT-45, made for use on the back of sportbikes, on the front, (rotating backwards as I was advised to by a motorcycle tire engineer). It does not matter if the roads are clear, wet or sandy this combination of tires handle superior to anything else I've ridden on including two times on racetracks. Yes, a bias-ply tire on the front and radial on the rear. The old rule of thumb to never mix radials and bias-ply pertains to tires on the same axle as in the rear on a car, not front vs. rear on a motorcycle. We went with this combination of tires for one reason, safety.

Another vote for the Commander II....on the front.
I run a Nokian car tire on the rear.
Over 8,000 miles so far and very little wear.

I have Avons on my 1500. The tread pattern doesn't seem too good for channeling water, and for the first time I dropped the bike in a water crossing. They handle well dry, but I don't trust them on wet surfaces. I may change them out early.

In the past I used Dunlop E3s. The grip was great, but they didn't seem to wear long, made a lot of noise, and the front tire cupped.
I was hoping Michelin would start making a tire for the 1500 again, and I would try them.

I bought my first Goldwing, a 2012 model, 18 months ago and have put over 35,000 miles on it.

I weigh 300 pounds and live in the Houston area. I ride all year round (hot roads in the summer and cooler in the winter). I also ride frequently with my wife with fully loaded saddle bags - between the two of us and our luggage, we are about 500 pounds.

In that time, I have tried 3 different tires, and here are the results:

1. Bridgestone G704/G709 - 9,261 miles. Replaced with 1 mm front & 1.5 mm rear tread left. Okay ride & handling, but my bike exhibited moderate head shake at 30-40 mph.

2. Dunlop Elite 4 - 10,079 miles. Replaced when rear tread reached 1.5 mm. The front still had 2.0 mm (about 25% life left, according to my calculations). These tires produced the BEST ride and with the E4 on the front, my head-shake was eliminated. But only 10,000 miles on the rear means I am changing tires 2-3 times per year.

3. Michelin Commander II - 18,000 miles (projected). I put these BIAS ply tires on my bike 9,800 miles ago. The rear has over 45% of its tread left (4.2 mm remaining). So, I should get 18,000 or more. The rear is a 180 X 65 X 16 with an 81 load rating, H speed rating. At 1,019 lbs rating (at 41 psi), this tire can carry 192 pounds MORE than the stock Bridgestones. Although the profile is slightly taller (65 vs 60), it only affects my speedometer by about 3% (at 70 mph indicated, the GPS shows 72 mph actual). Oddly, my odometer was about 3% off with the 60 profile tires, so now it is perfect.

I ran the 130 X 70 X 18 (same size as factory) BIAS ply Commander II on the front for about 7,000 miles before removing it. The tread life was going to be about 16,000 miles for the front, but as soon as I put it on, the head-shake returned - even more severe than the Bridgestones. Also, the handling was slightly affected, it seemed the bike tended to 'dive' into corners a bit more than with the RADIAL tires. When I got to about 6,000 miles on it, I replaced it and went back to the Dunlop Elite 4 on the front, and like before, the head-shake disappeared. Looking at the shape of the Michelin front tire vs the Dunlop, the Michelin's profile is much 'rounder' while the Dunlop is more 'oval'. Even though both tires are 130 mm wide, the Dunlop ends up actually putting more tread on the road while the bike is leaned over in curves. I think that's why it doesn't exhibit the head-shake that the Michelin did (but that's just a guess by me). I am projecting I will get about 14,000 miles on the front on the E4's. The Michelin would probably give me a few thousand more, but I'd rather have the stability of the E4's.

So, this is the setup I've found to work best for my 2012 Goldwing:

Front: Dunlop Elite 4 (130 X 70 X 18 63H - Radial) at 40 psi
Rear: Michelin Commander II (180 X 65 X 160 81H - Bias) at 38 psi

Mixing Radial and Bias ply tires has had ZERO discernable affect on the handling, braking, or anything else. And having a higher rated rear tire is a comforting thought. I also have Fobo real-time tire pressure and temperature monitors on my bike - so I can see the pressure and temperature as I ride. I have noticed that the Michelin tire consistently runs 20-30 degrees cooler, and as I ride, the pressure increases by only about 10 psi, vs 15 or more for the radial tires.

And getting 18,000 miles out of a rear tire that is stronger and runs cooler is a good deal for me.

My go to favorite tire dealer has a tiny shop on the City border .
I thought the Metzler 880' s "Read good " so, over the phone , I asked him to order me one , when my front got down to the wear bars.

LOL

He refused !!

His explanation : " I've had to replace way too many of those in last 2 years. The shop gets its money back, eventually , but it takes a lot of shop paperwork and time . The tread delaminates , and sometimes they develop a huge bubble blister on the sidewalls .... "

Goof Grief ! I asked " What do you recommend on an 800# bike, then ?"

His recommendation :
Dunlops . E3's .. which I bought , and had installed and balanced ..

They handle well even in the wet, or on grated bridges .
I like them . Getting fairly good mileage from them , as well.

Just say no to Metzler 880's, had two of them separate just like that on my Yamaha RSTD. Also had a Kenda Kruz on the rear of my GL1500 when I bought it blow, so it Elite 4's for me from here on out.....

For the 1500 there are limited (good) choices.
I tried them all on my old '96 before I sold it.
I put well over 100K miles on it and chnged tires myself -
I NEVER had a delamination of any kind.
HEAT build up is the enemy of tires - overloaded causes heat as does under pressure
Most Goldwingers do not check pressures regularly -- they give the tire a look test - "looks ok to me" and ride away --
Loaded to the max - 2-up and running hard down the interstate at 67 mph (to save fuel) for miles and miles...
And then complain when the tire doesn't hold up ...(not you just in general)

GL1500 tires that work the best in my experience --

Michelin Pilot GTs - (no longer made) - Average lifespan 18K miles (I used up 4 sets of these as did my riding buddy so 8 sets experience)

Dunlop E series - E3's back in the day average lifespan 18-20K with proper pressure health (Now E4s look to be a better tire)

Avon Venom (no longer made) Run them HARD - MAX COLD PSI ! - Avons run best hard - The Cobras I have on my GL1800 like it hard too...;)

Avon Cobra bias ply - run them at MAX COLD PSI indicated on the sidewall

CHECK tire pressures often - Inspect your tires all around by getting ON THE GROUND and spinning the wheel while you look it over.
KNOW what the tire is doing BEFORE your decide to ride away with your life depending on it (soap-box talk)

I tired a Car tire rear for 30,000 miles - worked fine but I did not like the way it handled.
I used a Bridgestone BattleAx 45 on the front for 19K miles and then changed to an E3 for the next 11K

The Michelin Commander II is a bias ply tire not meant to be on a Goldwing.

The Michelin disclaimer is usually found in the nearest trash can, as that is all the value it has for knowledgeable motorcycle riders.

I know for a fact, that the Michelin Alpin PA3 run flat 195/55 16 is one superior tire on the GL1800.

I have one on the ground, and one on the shelf ready to ride when it is needed.

I have a set of the new Dunlop Elite 4's on my bike. I can say that they outhandle the Elite 3's I used to have by a wide margin. Steering is lighter, turn-in is effortless, and braking is vastly improved, both on wet roads and dry.

The ride quality seems to be just a tiny bit smoother (and quite a bit quieter) than the E3's, which were relatively new when replaced.

I can't speak to service life, of course, as I haven't worn them appreciably in the last year, but I can say that I'm extremely happy with my experience with them so far.
