Gasoline stink after running

Post by Ricky Ro. » Wed Jan 03, 2018 4:03 pm

My 2000 GL1500 SE A, stinks of gasoline every time I shut it off. And is difficult to start. What is the problem?

I would suspect a petcock failure, either the vacuum line or the petcock itself might have a leak.

I suppose it also could be the cause for hard starting?

The gas smell is probably normal. Mine does that too. The gas cap is vented. And my garage stinks like gas after parking. :D

Next time you can't start the bike back up try opening the gas cap to relieve pressure and then start the bike. If that works then your gas cap may be partially clogged and you'll have to clean it. It could be something to do with the petcock but give the gas cap thing a try first.

A sure sign your petcock needs rebuilding is if you also have the little puddle of fuel in the tray under the petcock. What seeps out will make everything smell like gasoline!

Check the carb over flow pipe. the fuel vapour smell may be coming from there. have a look under the bike when you park up. the pips may be wet and you may also see the fuel vapour
