Pop pop pop

Post by Uncle Fester » Wed Jan 03, 2018 6:22 pm

I need some help, when I leave from a dead stop,or add power from a slow roll, I get a pop pop pop that reminds me of a CV Joint going bad...it SOUNDS like it is directly below or behind me. Can anyone give me a idea what it might be ?

Please be gentle (LOL) as this is our only vehicle until taxes come in in about 45-60 days...... THANKS !

Possible drive shaft issue - universal joint ?

Best investigate before it goes BANG

Going to talk to my mechanic in the AM, but U-Joint was replaced in March of last year. It SHOULD have lasted longer than that, right ?

Maybe a collapsed shock absorber - but if it's when power is applied through the drive train I would suspect the whole assembly.

If you put bike on centrestand - in neutral I would be turning the rear wheel by hand and see if you can locate the pop or feel if there is a lot of play in the rear wheel. put it in gear and rock the rear wheel back and forward for the amount of play.

cheers

When the U joint started to fail on my GL1500, I could feel the vibration very distinctly through the foot pegs. At highway speeds, if I was accelerating or decelerating there was no vibration, but if I let it coast, where the U-joint wasn't loaded, I could feel the vibration in the pegs.

when the u-joint was replaced did they inspect the other end of the drive line good and apply fresh moly, if the splines at the rear end side are failing the first sign is a pop pop pop when under a load taking off. or at least that is how mine failed on my 88

They did apply moly paste to the splines at that time.

I also have not been able to reproduce the pop pop pop sense that evening, but as the wife and I both heard it,I know I am not going crazy. . . Yet! Lol

I did put the bike on the center stand, with no results. I also tried wiggling the rear tire side to side with no wiggle found, so now I am scratching my head and getting more confused, but as it has not happened again, I am a LITTLE less worried about it.

Have you checked the rear wheel bearings. the rear disc may be warped or brake calliper may be sticking

Well, after a good amount of riding today, I can tell you that the rear Shocks are GONE!
Not sure if I had my head up a particular orifice or what, but I never really noticed how bad they where until today. Yes I knew they needed replaced, but I felt like I was on a ridged today ! Looked underneath and one is covered in oil, bad seals, and the air shock just looked bad/tired.
So, come tax time, it will be new tires, new rear Shocks, steering bearings, and ignition switch. Oh and arm rests for the wife.... Wave bye bye to about $2000 .

Glad you found the problem and it is only a maintenance item - not a main drive problem...any pictures to show the damage ?
