Charging system issue - battery good, alt good GL1500

Post by ANGELGIRL » Sat Oct 23, 2010 12:14 pm

I just had alternator rebuilt and had battery tested, it's good. When first starting/running charging at 14-15 volts, within a mile or two volts go down to about 10 and keep dropping and all of a sudden no power and it will go completely dead while driving. After couple of hours volts will come back up a bit to be able to start it, but each time it runs for about 10 minutes or so the volts will drop back down and system will shut down. When this happens I have checked the volts across the battery and across the alternator, both are about the same output around 10v. I have checked and all fuses are good.
Any suggestions would be great.

Good one. I would clean all of the ground connections and make sure they are tight. Grounds can really cause some weird problems.

My best friend is a small 6" flat file, I have used this little guy on just about every nut and connection washer that I have on the bike, it shines them up with little effort....Hold your tongue to the left while filing...It works best for me... Let us know when you fix it

It sounds very similar to another member who has check alternator etc. Check your fuse on the cruise control. If this goes the engine runs off the battery only and will soon die. Don't ask me why it just does. I had the same problem and came up with the solution at the same time as a guy in Australia. He put the result on Steve Saunders Goldwing site.

It's possible that even though the alternator was rebuilt, the internal regulator could be bad. Just a guess though. It's pretty common to see electrical components break down under heat, and then operate normally as they cool down. Easisest way to check this would be to install a known good alternator on your bike, if you have access to one. Let us know what you find out.

My alternator is putting out 13.5 volts, but at the battery at 2500 rpms, I only get 12.50 volts, what is the problem?

There's a 50 amp dogbone fuse link between the alternator and battery.

I had a very similar problem on my '97, except reversed. Mine would start out with no charging, and after a mile or 2 it would charge normally. My issue was very dirty alternator brushes, causing intermittent contact with the rotor. My next guess would be the voltage regulator pack inside the alternator, as was already suggested. OR, it could also be a crack, or loose connection on the dogbone fuse, as was also suggested.
BTW, when you are at 10V, there is no charging going on. I would say that as soon as the battery measures 12.5V or less, your alternator has already failed. The bike is just running off battery power until it hits the point of no return at 10V, where it then shuts down. The battery will recover after a while and allow a restart, but unless you are then reading 13-14V, your alternator is still malfunctioning.

I mis-spoke..It's a 55 amp.

there should be a replacement in the cover.
schematic shows only that fuse between the alt and batt

the location is to the right of the battery

That is on the 1800 wing, this guy has a 1500 wing.
