1989 GL1500 won't start

Post by Straydogg » Thu Jan 11, 2018 7:33 pm

OK...today it was 60 degrees for the first time in quite a while. When I got home from work I decided to start up the old girl. It's been on a battery tender since the weather turned to cold. Maybe 3 months. I have started it once since then with no problems. Today I disconnected the charger, which shows a full charge, hit the key and the start button and ...nothing. No crank, no clicking, nothing. Radio, lights and everything working good. Kill switch in the right spot. Side stand up or down doesn't seem to matter. Clutch in or out doesn't matter. Not in reverse. Nothing happens. Lights don't dim. What am I missing here? After about 15 minutes I just walked away. Any ideas? :?

I hope that you did not get a visitor from the mice and rat clan.

I did a couple winters back, totally devoured the wiring harness on a very expensive Snapper Zero Turn mower.

Did the headlight go out when you pushed the start button.?
It's also possible the main relay is not working well. The relays can be swapped around to find out.

You said clutch makes no difference in or out. Are you in neutral and do you have a neutral light and 1989 i assume you have a lever for reverse, make sure it is pushed all the way down. Happened to me once and that can be a head scratcher. Let us know what you found.

Only thing I didn't check is reverse handle. Don't know how that could be the problem because I have started it since it's been parked and didn't use reverse but I will check that tonight. All lights are normal.

I thought all goldwings turned off the headlights when the start button was pushed.
