Are All Gl1500 seats/saddles the same?

Post by Shawn4245 » Sun Jan 28, 2018 10:46 am

Hello everyone, my 88 wings seat is starting to pull apart. It is the original, so I think it did pretty good! The passenger back rest pad has also seen better days! So I have been watching ebay for a replacement and even thought about just getting a replacement skin and doing it myself. But, I have seen New OEM seats available as well and that got me thinking. Honda no longer offers an 88 or 89 seat, but for $639, I can get a 1990 seat, so I kept looking and see that Honda still offers the newer model seats for a pretty decent price. A 2000 seat is $232 and the same matching 2000 passenger pad is $53. Partzilla is free shipping on orders over $149, so I am thinking to get both a new OEM saddle and the OEM passenger pad. If it lasts another 30 years, my unborn grand children will have to get it upholstered!
So my big question, Are all GL1500 seats interchangeable? If I get both the same saddle and the same back rest pad from the same model and year, they will be color matched but will they fit?
The skins to recover the seat are $100-$200, so it might be a bit cheaper in money, but it will look cheaper as well!!!
What do you all think?

According to the partzilla catalog the same part numbers corresponding to the years are as follows. The differences may be due to the shape, dimension, color or manufacturer. Hard to tell without trying.

88-89
90
91-94
95-96
97
98-2000

Thank you for the reply, I think the different part numbers for the year are the color choices, I see that there is a type 1,2,3,4 as well. I was thinking that the type might be the same from year to year. Type 1 is a 88 89, 90 and then you see type 1 in several other years, but those years have several "Type" choices...I was thinking two tone? or special anniversary edition / logo. I don't really know, but I am hoping some here might know. Thanks again!

At some point, 95 or 96 I think the seat was made a little lower.

I also have read that, but still wondering if the seat pan is the same. I just believe it has to be

What about going to an upholstery shop and getting your current seat form redone (new foam, new cover if needed)? This way you know the seat will fit for one, and you can match the backrest also.

Just thinking of other options if possible.

I am sure there are probably YouTubes that show how to do it also.

I wound up making the same decision as you. I ordered a new seat and backrest from Partzilla a couple of years ago. To my knowledge, the only differences in the seats over the years were color, the inclusion or lack of a zippered rain cover on the main seat rear bumper, and the 1" lower sculpting of the seats after a certain year. A further indication of their interchangeability would be the aftermarket seat makers, like Corbin, Saddlemen, etc., who specify their seats for GL1500 1988-2000.
As far as color, good luck with that. I had to do a bunch of research to nail down the actual color of mine, and even then it wasn't for sure until I received it. You are apparently located in Atlanta, which to my knowledge, is where Partzilla ships from. So, you might actually be able to stop by to do a hands on with them to verify color.

my suggestion is to buy a new OEM seat for a '97 or newer, those have new contours that will let you sit lower and a little farther back.

Much more comfortable, I put one on a '94SE and it was much better than the Diamond that came on the bike.

Can't say for sure, as the 89/90 models have a few parts that are particular to them but I do know for a fact that a seat for a 2000 model does fit my 92. Seeing as they fit mine perfect, I'd think it's a fairly safe bet to assume it would fit yours
Only difference is colour (my OEM seat is Cosmopolitan Gray, while the one off the 2000 is black, with a darker gray side inserts) and lack of zippered pouch in the bumper pad for the seat's rain cover.
I got the slightly used 2000 seat/passenger pad mainly for the included Utopia Backrest for $200. I still use the OEM one that came on my 92. I just like to switch them around to spread the wear between them and because I have a love/hate relationship with the backrest!

before '95 or '96 the 1500 interstate used a lower seat than the aspencade or se to aid in moving it backwards, otherwise all 1500 seats interchange

1. It is comfortable but if you have a short inseam, the sheep skin may make it difficult for you to put both feet flat on the ground.
2. A big downside for me is sheepskin gets wet when it rains and takes a long while to dry. That makes for a wet backside.

Most any OEM seat will probably work for you but matching the color of the seat to the passenger backrest can be difficult. Maybe you can buy a seat and backrest combination for sale on one of the Auction sites such as Ebay or Craig's list. At any rate, it is cheaper to buy used than have one re-upholstered.

Thanks everyone, You all pretty much confirmed my thoughts. To take the saddle to a shop and have them redo it and the back passenger back pad will cost more then a newer OEM seat and a Back Pad. I will buy both the back pad and the seat from the same model so they will match. My bike is the Beige 88 so it will go with pretty much anything. It is my daily driver, so it sits in a parking lot while I am at work and sometimes mother nature decides to give my bike a bath and the seat gets wet. With a sheep skin or really any covering other than vinyl will be a mistake for me. Thanks for everyone helping me!!! I love this site and everyone helping each other!!!

I finally, after a number of aftermarket add-ons to help the ride, bit the bullet and bought a new seat from the dealership. Got it for $225, which I thought was a great deal!

Hey Dusty, does your love hate relationship also extend to your front caliper covers?

YES!

I don't bother with them anymore as they get very dirty, very fast anytime it rains and I ride a fair amount in the rain!

You might look here viewtopic.php?f=9&t=41093

Someone on the board is offering a seat for a '91 GL1500.
