Compatibility and Alternator Question

Post by landisr » Mon Feb 05, 2018 6:05 pm

Hi again. I am considering upgrading to a newer 1500 and have a couple questions:

1) Are the mufflers between the early and later models interchangeable, in case I buy a later model and may not be happy with the "sound" of the newer mufflers?

2) Is there a way to identify which alternator might be on a potential "new" 1500? In other words, from looking at an alternator, how might I be able to determine whether it is a stock one from an earlier, supposedly more reliable model, or is it a later one, or is it after market? I realize there is no way to determine the condition of the brushes, etc. without opening it up, so I would have it serviced right away, similar to timing belts.

TIA. Ron in AZ

Hi Ron.

Here is a picture of three different alternators together.

I do not have other pictures but this will get you started.

The earlier model 1500s had a more durable alternator.

Don't recall when Honda switched over to the Chinese version, around '96 ??

I don't have pictures of those two models.

The OEM alternators will look like the ones posted that have the green colored stator as shown.
I believe, and I can't confirm this, that the Japanese (better quality) manufactured units will be identified as such, with "Made In Japan" on the I.D. label. The Chinese versions seem to have no identity for origin, as pictured in the alternate photo.

Thanks a lot. Very helpful. 👍

Can anyone shed any light on the mufflers? I tend to believe they are interchangeable.

Thanks again.

Ron

The mufflers are interchangeable 1988 through 2000.
