SE or Aspencade SE

Post by MAC » Sun Feb 11, 2018 8:21 pm

I am negotiating with a gentleman For a 1996 GL 1500. He is saying it is an SE but it says Aspencade on the saddlebag I asked and he indicated it is an Aspencade SE I have seen GL 1500 with SE on them. What is this one?

In 1996 there were 3 distinct models. Interstate, Aspencade, and SE. To my knowledge, there was no, and never has been such a thing as an Aspencade SE.
I believe the SE was the only model to have 2 tone paint, achieved with decals applied in the center of certain side panels.

Go to this web site and plug in the VIN and see what it says. I put my VIN there for both the 1994 and 2000 SE models that I have and it said they were both SE models so it got that right.

The SE has adjustable foot rest for passengers, the bike in your picture does not.

The SE had two-tone paint, trunk spoiler/light, rear speakers, windscreen vent, lighted handlebar switches, adjustable passenger footboards and foot warmer vents that looked better than they worked. Also a CB radio. The control for the CB radio are different from the ones that you get if you add a Honda CB to an Aspencade, Here is a picture of the SE Cb control on my 97 SE.
There is a lever under the right passenger pocket to release the adjustable foot rests. The bike in the picture is not an SE.

My '94 is definitely an Aspencade, but it has the same CB controls you have pictured. I also have the trunk spoiler, rear speakers, lighted handlebar controls, fader knob, and foot vents. Mine doesn't have the adjustable foot rests and cornering lights that came standard on an SE. Evidently, dealers were able to order some different options in some year models, at least for the Aspencade.

Would you happen to have pictures of your set up? I'm very interested to see the Hybrid Aspencade/SE, particularly the handlebar controls. I'm curious why someone would go to the trouble to add the CB Controls with Fader and lighted controls. That is a lot o work. There are several wires that would need to be added to make it all come together.

I installed the Honda CB accessory radio and controls as well as the Trunk Spoiler on my '98 Aspencade. The controls are certainly not the same as the SE version.

Hugger, you have the heated vents that open down by your foot? Seems that would be a hard thing to add to an Aspencade. You would have to add the knob assembly, cable and the flappers that open down by the exhaust on both sides. Somebody went to an awful lot of trouble to add all that stuff to an Aspencade.

Post some pictures of your bike, I as well as others would love to see it. As others said, there is a lot of work to add foot heaters, and SE CB controls to an Aspencade.

I thought I had some in other posts on this forum already, but I've searched everywhere and couldn't find them. I'll take some new pics and post as soon as weather breaks and I go uncover it!

If that '94SE you are looking at resembles this one, go find another one

the SE definitely is a two tone, with the nice looking insert panels on the sides of it.

Glad you found what the bike really is. And all SE's do not have 2 tome paint. My 97 Pearl Saphire didn't. MOST SE's had 2 tone paint

I too have a 1996 GL1500 ASPENCADE, but one of the previous owners added most of theSE stuff, CB, Spoiler, 4speaker stereo, etc. the only things not added on mine was the two tone paint and adjustable passenger foot boards.
I have never heard of a Aspencade SE and can not find anything on one with Google Search either.....hmmmn.
Either way, it should be a great bike for you as the GL1500 is a near bulletproof bike.
