As long as it fits, it will be fine. I run a 205 on my VTX and when the tire is done on the wing, I'll do the same.

All of the research I have done indicates that the 205 won't fit the gl1500 Wing. Width clearance issue. The 175 seems to be the widest CT that can be used. On the Valk yes but not on the Wing.

EEwww!! I checked and there's nowhere I can get a 175/75 - 16 nor a 175/80 - 16 locally. Only via mail order and I don't like the idea of mail order for a tire. I want to see the tire before I buy it!.......... Always another hurdle!

How about a 175-70 or 65/60 possibly Cpoied this from another site I belong to. Try it. Been lurking, now my turn to post. Received a 175/60-16 Forenza from Don H. on the GWWRA board. (Don if you're here, the tire looks great-many thanks) Mounted it tonight. An easy job, probably didnt take 15 minutes after I figured out that using a big C clamp to keep the dropped in beads together would make it easy. Beads popped out after a couple of cycles of air and some spotting with murphy's oil soap on q-tip. Keeping it minimal for Dynabeads. Looks good, and eyeballing with a square looks like its exactly the same width as the metzler 880 I have on it now. Have the goldwing in the basement and have the plastic pulled off the back. Have friday off, and will pull the trailer hitch and mount tire and do a little other maintainance and then GO FOR A RIDE !

Yes the 205/60-16 will work. Only difference is the width, 1.5" wider and .39" shorter. Will Change speedo about 1 mph. Start at 38psi and drop 2psi until it feels good, 34-36 is close.

Time for more research. I think that is too wide and will rub on the swing arm but I'm only repeating what I have read on other darkside threads. Don't forget we are talking about the GL1500 Gold Wing not the VTX or Valk.

Not all tire are the same specs and while some run a 205 I have heard others say it rubbed at low pressure. The Vredestein is the same size as the OEM spec tire. Only difference is its a car tire you wont know is there.

Hell its driving me nuts here in AUSTRALIA i just don't seam to be able to find anywhere on a suitable car tyer for my 1994 Goldwing everyone says you cannot do it well i think there must be one out there somewhere can any one put me in the right direction PLEASE.

Let Google be your friend. In about 2 mins I found JaxTyres (I think they are nationwide), and they could supply a Hankook RA08 and a Goodyear Cargo G26, and these are the first ones I found.

I am sure if you employ Google, you might even find a runflat model to suit.

The Michelin Run-Flat I installed on my Wing performs BETTER than a motorcycle tire. There is more siping on the edge for enhanced grip in turns, especially wet turns. The ride is smoother, quieter and more stable. The contact patch when riding straight is larger than a MT thus increasing the road resistance when braking. More stable on gravel or loose road material as well. I have zero complaints about high angle turns with this tire, even with a passenger. The cost savings and longevity aside, I choose to not be a "purist" on an issue with so many benefits and no tangible downsides.

What size run flat did you use that fits..I cna only see one that are too big 195/55/16??? or bigger since 160/80/16 is stock size?? right???

195/55/16 Michelin Alpin Run-Flat. It's actually a snow tire. I put two ounces of Dyna beads in also. Tirerack.com. Don't tell them it's for a motorcycle.

I have posted on other Darkside threads that I am using the Austone Taxi Tire 175R16 on my 97 gl1500SE. This tire has given me more confidence in its gripping the road than ANY bike tire I have tried in 35 years of riding bikes. It gives superiour traction in any weather conditon both under hard braking and hard acceleration at any lean angle up to and including grinding the pegs on both sides.Riding on gravel roads is more predictable, the only surface that I cant comment on yet is metal decked bridges.
Do your research, form your own opinion . There are an awful lot of us out there using various car tires on the back of our bikes, it is no longer a matter of can this work ,its a matter of are you going to try it and see if you like it. I for one am convinced it is safe and actually better, I used to be able to break loose the E3's that came on my bike on dry pavement without really trying too, I cant do that with the Austone wet or dry. It works well for me, if you were in my area I would lend you my bike to see for your self.

ONe of my riding buddies and I traded bikes one day for a good ride through twistys and at speed..He wanted to feel the car tire and see if it was for him...He had a set of Pilot GTs on his bike (which I loved when I had mine). Aftwer the ride he said it was no different in his opinion ...? Slight differences in the feel but nothing one could not get used to in short order.

What kind of mileage are you getting out of it? Do you have any pictures you could post?

I will post some Pics on it Saturday, going for a ride anyways. Thats right going for a ride December 1st up here in the Great White North. I would guess that there is 10,000km on the rear so far, I cant see any wear yet.I will take a measurement. I put on just shy of 40,000km this year. I finished wearing out the tires that were on the bike when I bought it, I replaced the front with an E3 and the rear with the Austone taxi tire from universal tire. I have, at this writting, worn out out the front E3 and the Austone shows virtually no wear yet.

here is a pic showing the tread pattern, notice how round the shoulders of the tread are.

You can see little "whiskers" on the edges of the tread when new.

Its hard to see in this pic but those little "whiskers" are still there, a lot shorter, but still there.
Sorry I couldnt find my calipers today to take an accurate measurement of the tread depth. I would say there is a healthy 1/4 inch there. I couldnt find any listing for what the tread depth was when new.

heres a pic from the ground showing the clearance between the sidewall and the swingarm. As you can see there is lots of room. The wheel/tire just slid in without any issues.

I am a "spirited" rider and love to play in the twisties,I can scrap the pegs on both sides with this tire even with the increased ride height and the air shocks pumped up to max pressure. Yes it is a very long way over. I am not easy on my tires. I expect this tire to see me through another full riding season at least. Now I have to decide what rear bike tire to use on the front for next spring and I will then be Double Darkside.
