Headlight mirrors

Post by GlimWas » Tue May 01, 2018 1:32 am

Maybe a strange question, but is there any way to repair/repaint the chrome finish of the mirrors of the clear headlight of the '98 - '00 GL1500?
Mine are showing the white plastic that's underneath the chrome surface due to, i presume, the heat of the halogen bulbs that were in there.
It's not that i drive the wing often at night, but it bothers me and want it solved. I know of the conversion to projectors a member has done, but i prefer
the original look. Suggestions are welcome.

I worked in a GM plant that produced composite headlamps for automotive/trucking vehicles.
Your headlamp is just like these. It can be done but, extremely difficult unless you know what you're doing.
The lens and the housing are bonded together and are very hard to separate,
The finish on the housing reflector surface is not paint. It is aluminized coating with a sealer on top of the aluminize.

I am not afraid to take the assembly apart, 10min at 80 Celsius wil soften the glue. It is the mirror i am worried about and if it's repairable at reasonable cost.
It is the latter i am worried about the most

The chrome on the reflector is not painted on. First a base layer is sprayed on the plastic, then the reflector is exposed to a vapor cloud (vapor deposition) that leaves a thin, but very smooth layer of aluminum on the reflector that is very shiny because of its smoothness. A sealer is then applied over the aluminum to prevent it from oxidizing.

The process and equipment for doing this is very expensive.

I have read about a product called PChrome that purports to be a spray-on chroming product. I've never tried it, nor have I seen the results in person. It's not cheap either, with the cheapest "starter kit" priced at $600:

For that price, you might as well just buy a new headlight - Cyclemax sells them: http://cyclemax.com/inc/sdetail/gl1500_ ... ght/83/743

You can get the OEM headlight for $220, #8 in the list, and I believe the shipping is free over $150, and no tax unless you live in Georgia.

I doubt the shipping will be free to the Netherlands, but thank you for the link
