Riddle me this!

Post by TwoTone Trike » Tue Jun 05, 2018 9:11 pm

I have a 99 se that I bought in May of last year so relatively new to me. When I got it it had what I call a flat spot in the throttle. When I would wick the throttle it would hesitate and then pick up rpms. If I tried to give it the gas on take-off it would stall out. I would have to just ease out on the clutch without giving it the gas until I got rolling and then roll on the gas. Well today I took a ride and I guess just for the hell of it I decided to turn the choke on about 1/3 of the way to see if it made any difference in the way it ran. I ran it that way for maybe a half a mile. Well guess what. It runs perfect now. Any ideas as to what the problem could have been and why running the choke fixed it. Could it have had a drug clogging the carbs and with the choke on the extra gas pushed it on through? Beats me but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth!

Since the choke isn't a choke that is a mystery.

My guess would be a vacuum line collapsing that has temporarily hardened from sitting. If so, a few rides on a hot day will probably soften it back up and your issue will return.

Hugger-4641, That's a very good possibility but until then I'm going to enjoy it and ride the wheels off of her. Also I think the previous owner babied her and didn't ride her hard enough. Cause it seems the harder I ride her the better she runs. :D :D :D :D

Sounds like it's running a bit lean.
The 'choke" is actually a fuel enricher valve.Open it a bit adds a bit more fuel to the engine.
Same answer tho.Vacuum lines and/or partially plugged jets.
Perhaps a few doses of snake oil may help clear it up.

I had something similar. Found it to be old stale gas. The fresh fuel partly cleared out whatever it was. SeaFoam works wonders.

On another note but could be an issue. Vac lines wearing holes. 1 vac line had a sheath left and it flap open or closed depending on its mood. One BUGGER to search for, took me over a year of part time looking to find it.
2 usual suspects. Hard to see so use a mechanics inspection mirror & flashlight. Look at a carb line, 4mm dia. 'left rear' and 'front left' 1/2" dia.. At their elbows is where they wear through. (If so, PM me for an inexpensive fix)

ODD but might be this. The petcocks diaphragm has a small hole. Have to open it up to see it, usually on the bottom of the disc.

HOPE THIS HELPS. ;)

2 tone bike ay. B-flat & F-sharp?

Thanks FM, I'll check those things the first chance I get. But for right now she's running fine.
