Best glue for parts?

Post by hap2 » Thu Jun 07, 2018 5:57 pm

My left front air deflector fell off going about 30 mph. I managed to go back & pick it up, but what's the best glue or bast way to secure it back in place?

What part are you referring to as the air deflector?

OK, so it's this piece you're talking about:

I would NOT glue this into place. If anything, I would use some ABS and some ABS glue (which is the absolute best thing to use on our ABS body parts) to repair the cracks and the screw tab. An alternative would be to find a replacement part online.

You don't want to glue it in place, because it must be removed in order to remove the side cowl, which has to be removed in order to do a lot of service and maintenance tasks on the bike.

Right u r. I just took 2 pics of the part & where it goes on the bike. It is broken by the screw part on the bike. Could this have been caused by the stress of a wide strap around the seat area the poor excuse for a tow truck driver used when he used 8 straps with the kickstand down on his flat deck? Scary. Now I have to have someone check it out for possible damage.

Overtorqued screw could cause the damage. A picture of the damage would help us to comment better.

Don't glue that on, you'll need to remove it for some services.

Ok I won't glue it on, but may have to glue the broken piece of it back together, & and then put it back on

Can you get Plastex in the US.

I generally use ABS and ABS glue for repairs as it works the best: it's meant for ABS, which is what our body panels are made of.

That said, I did give Plast-aid a try (click for my review, with pictures) and it worked well. It would work reasonably well for building tabs or other pieces that might have been lost. I would not use it for repairs on any piece that might flex, as it would likely break free of the ABS. It is extremely hard and somewhat brittle when it cures, and if the ABS it is bonded to flexes, it would break free. For a part that does not flex, it seemed to be a good repair.

FYI for anyone who's having issues with body parts either coming off to easy or simply DON'T want to lose it. (the part), try this.
Carry a small roll of crystal clear packaging tape. Once in place it's almost invisible.
IF you can keep your fingers really clean your fingerprints won't show much. Or before pressing down, knife cut the prints area away.

Or...just replace the grommets with new, soft, pliable ones:
