Expected/Average Alternator Life

Postby djoyner » Sun Jan 16, 2011 5:57 pm

I pulled the alternator today and disassembled it to check the brushes and bearings.

The armature turns freels with no binding or unusual noise.

The brushes are not worn down (not even close to the wear lines).

Checked to make sure that the slip rings had some resistance between them and that both had infinite resistance to the armature.

The bearing that goes in the rear cover wasn't binding and was not loose on the shaft.

I'm wondering if the PO replaced the alternator. Is there any 'average' life for the alternator? Those of you who have owned a new GL1500, at what mileage was the alternator replaced (if at all)?

Thanks.

When I purchased my 93 1500 two years ago it had 36k miles. The alt. had not been replaced. I pulled it just because and found it to be in very good condition. No appreciable wear at all.

\i purchased a 97 GL 1500 it had 121,000 km, 80,000 mi on it. No idea when or if the Alternator had been touched
The Alternator failed shortly after I purchased it, I just replaced the brushes, OEM from Honda $35 . The bearings looked and felt fine. put on another 13,000 km 8,500 mi since. All is Well
