Parts Replacement on 1500 Alternator

Postby rkahan » Wed Jan 26, 2011 1:04 pm

Have a 1999 SE1500 that stopped charging. Can't find anything obvious so am concluding the alternator quit. Thinking of taking it apart and rebuilding. What parts do folks recommend? Brushes? Regulator? Is there a test that can verify that windings are OK?

Thank you.

If the alternator isn't charging, I would guess that the brushes are either stuck or worn down too far to make contact with the armature or the armature could be open or shorted. I hear that the late model GL1500 alternators were made in China and had a higher failure rate than the older ones.

If you took it to an alternator repair shop, I'm sure they could test it and tell you what is wrong. If you prefer to troubleshoot it yourself, there are two wires going to alternator. Both should read the same as the battery voltage.

If you disassemble the alternator, you can check that (1) there is a few ohms of resisitance between the slip rings
and (2) there is no continuity between the slip rings and the rotor shaft.
