'88 trunk won't open

Postby dvcruz » Thu Feb 03, 2011 2:24 pm

Hi. I know you all know the story. Trunk lid won't open, so hook the release bar from below the trunk with a wire and pull down to pop the latches. But, what if you can't find the release bar? Believe me, me and my bro have spent hours looking for it and it isn't there. We know where it should be and we've seen it in the past, but it's like it fell off somewhere in the trunk and isn't where it should be. (Note. My bro had been working on the trunk lights just before this happened, so this is probably where the problem began. Nevertheless, we can't see the bar.).
So...is there some other way of getting this trunk open? It doesn't look like we can start taking parts off the trunk to get to the release latches because most everything is attached to the trunk from the inside of the trunk.
Anyone have an idea?? Please don't tell me that the release bar HAS to be there. It's not. We can see the locking mech where the bar would pass thru and it's not there.
Would taking off the seat or saddlebags help any?
Finally, is there anyone in the San Jose area with a 1500 willing to let me see there trunk mech? I want to see if there is some way around the release bar.
Thanks!

Back in the San Diego area!

You cannot see the release bar from outside the trunk. Even when it is in the correct position, you cannot see it. That's why the "release hook" has to go up, and then towards the back of the trunk when using it.

Have a look at viewtopic.php?f=6&t=29575 - the release bar popped out of the catch in my trunk, and I had to drill a hole to get it open.
