turn signals wont cancel manually (gl 1500)

Postby SmartBiker » Thu Mar 17, 2011 12:56 pm

i performed the diagnosis (per honda shop manual) and everything points to the turnsignal cancel unit in the steering tube.
the cruise control works fine and i get continuity on the wire the controls the push to cancel function at the canceller unit.
is there anything else i should look for?

was wondering what do the gurus on here think.

oh, and im new to the board

thank you.

I guess I'm a little cornfused. Are you saying the turn signals auto-cancel ok, but you can't manually cancel them? If that's the case, then it would indicate to me that the contacts and switches on the right hand control pod need some attention, ie cleaning and lubing. Others can chime in with recommendations. I've heard good and bad about spraying WD40 in there. More people seem to like Radio Shack's contact cleaner spray. Sometimes you can get away with just spraying along side the buttons while working them; others say to open the halves and clean them that way.

Good luck. Ron in MI

I would also guess that the contacts are sticking on the "left" hand controls. Use spray contact cleaner and work the switch back and forth and in and out a few times. Also the switch is not hard to take apart if you want to do clean the mechanism properly.

It would really suck having to make left or right turns all the time. If they self cancel and or turn cancel, whats the concern? They will cancel?.?.?.?.

they cancel, but the turn indicator flickers momentarily a few seconds after auto cancelling and the push to cancel does not work.

I had the same problem. Only cancel manually when I bumped the switch to the opposite turn. Next they quit working all together. I tried to trouble shoot for 2 months. Gave in and took to Honda shop with a Switch Assembly I got off Ebay. They found wires crushed on the handle bars. They installed the Switch Assembly I gave them and now they work. Charged me $420.00 for the trouble shoot and replace. Another shop I hired to torque my bearing in the steering head, I think they causes a connector to come loose. When I took it back they could not find the problem . At that time I think they crushed the wire assembly. Check connectors first.
Good luck. See my post on Steve Sanders Goldwing sight.
