GL1500 Tail Lights not consistant

Postby jqtandberg » Mon Apr 04, 2011 8:46 pm

I have a 1995 GL1500 Aspencade. The lower rear tail lights (on the saddle bags) don't always come on. The bulbs are good because sometimes they work. Sometimes, it takes about 30 seconds after starting the bike for the lights to come on. The upper tail lights (on the luggage compartment) always work. Help me to see the light! Thanks.

Hi, You did not mention if these are after market add on,s Custom chrome or other. If so check the quick splices underneath where there tied into the main harness. You can open them back up with a very small flat tip screwdriver and check for wire corrosion. Just a guess without having seen it, Goodluck to Ya.

If both sides are doing the same thing then you have to find a common point in the wiring. Under the seat on the left side there is a rubber sleeve where all the tail light wires connect. Could be a loose or corroded connector. They also have a common ground point but I don't remember, for sure, if that is in there also.

Thanks for the responses. These tail lights are all original factory equipment (I have not progressed to the customizing stage - yet!). I did some further trouble shooting and the brake lights work (on the saddle bags) all the time - it's just the tail lights that like to take time off! This morning when I started the bike, the tail lights came on after about 5 seconds ( a short delay). Is there a relay for the tail lights? All other lights (headlight, etc) come on immediately.

You may not have added the lights but thats not to say the previous owner did'nt. I had trouble with mine and it was the vampire type splices that caused it all. I took them off and threw tham away. I don't know WHY anyone would use them for anything other than a tempoary/emergency fix. I spliced them back together and soldered and used heat shrink and have not had a problem since.

Edit: No relay associated with only the saddle bag tail lights. Power is switched on to the tail lights thru relay # 3 thru the ignition switch. (All tail lights.) You more than likely have a loose or corroded connection at the point where the wiring is routed to each saddle bag.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have found the guilty culprit - the ignition switch. If I turn the switch toward the ACC position (just ever so slightly) they come on. Does this sound like a problem with the switch base? Can that be cleaned / repaired as opposed to replaced?

A lot of the time you can take the switch apart and clean it to fix the problem. If not, and it is truly worn out, you can get a replacement part of the switch portion without having to change the key portion.
