What year? My 85 had that problem and it was a connection inside the headlight housing. I had traced the wring from the switch in the engine ot the meter panel.

When does it do this? Does it do it in 5th gear or does it come on when it should not?
You may have a broken filament in the bulb, sometimes it makes contact and sometimes it does not. Eventually it will burn out if this is the problem. Change the bulb and see what happens.

Does the light come on when you first turn the key on? If it does not then it is more than likely a bad bulb. If it comes on when all the other lights come on you could have a sticky or bad OD switch. Hope this helps. Mike

There is a gear selector switch inside the front engine cover. To test the switch there is a connector inside the right lower faring above the right cooling fan shroud. It is a black six pin connector. 5th gear wire is green/orange. In 5th gear you should have continuity between the green/orange wire and ground. Might be hard to check accurately though if it is intermittent.
Could be a loose connection at the lamp socket or any other connectors associated with that circuit.

Mine just quit also but it does not come on when I first turn the key on so I am going to check the bulb first. After that I will do what dingdong said he has given me other advice and seems to know what he is talking about. Good luck, Mike

Thought I'd add on to this 5 year old post because my '98 is experiencing the same issue with the OD lamp. (my over drive light comes on and off). It's in overdrive, and the lamp flickers dimly, however if I pull in the clutch lever and come to a stop with the bike still in overdrive, the lamp comes on solidly. I haven't changed the bulb yet. Wondering what others have found with the same issues.

Thanks,
Ride Safe,

Jim M

My OD light became inconsistent and wouldn't light up on test. It finally quit coming on. I ordered a new bulb and installed it and it is now consistent, although it still doesn't light up on ignition turn on test
