GL1500 locked in reverse

Postby mikeswing » Sun May 01, 2011 10:37 pm

I am trying to get a 1989 1500 out of reverse. I put it in reverse, backed up, and now it is locked up. I have adjusted the cables 3 times everything on the handle side is working properly but it will not release. Even while trying the handle while rocking the bike back and forth . Any ideas. :? :? :?

Mikeswing: Remove the rubber cover and then remove the reverse handle by removing the Allen bolt. Pull the handle off and reverse gear should reset to neutral. You may have to rock the bike at this time. Check the round pin in the handle to see if it is bent. If not, clean lubricate and reinstall.

Thanks dingdong, I have pulled the handle off and the pin was bent, but not bad, straightend and replaced with no luck but I will do it again and rock the bike and see what happens. Should the key be on while performing this task? Thanks again. Mike  :?

Probably work better with bike running and in neutral.

Thats another problem, since it locked in in reverse it will not turn over. The headlight goes out like it should when pushing the start switch but nothing happens. The cruise will not turn on and the air compressor will not work either. Does this help in any way. Mike :? :?

Not sure about this now. Might have a blown fuse or a defective relay. Will have to do some research.

The next step is to check the reverse switch. It is located on right side just behind the oil dip stick. Remove the rubber cover and disconnect the GRN/ORN wire from the reverse switch. Check for continuity between the switch terminal and ground. There should be continuity with the reverse lever in the OFF position; no continuity with the lever in the ON position.
If not in above condition perform the next check: Remove the reverse switch and washer. Inspect the inside terminal's operation. It should move in and out smoothly. Check for continuity between the terminal and the case. There should be continuity with switch in normal position and no continuity with the plunger pushed in.
If this switch is working go to this link and download a manual. It is for a 96 but almost everything will be the same. There is a trouble shooting flow chart that give step by step procedures.

Something else. I don't think the cruise or the air will work in reverse. Nor should the headlight dim if you are actually in reverse.

Wrong again. The cruise and the compressor do work when in reverse. The headlight shouldn't go out when you press the start button in reverse though. Still looking.

well I got my trike kit on and took out for a ride, it is different to ride but I think I will like it down the road. Now back to the 89 Gremlin. I appreciate all the info but this thing really has me stumped. :?:

You never said if the lever will move up and down or if it is mechanically stuck in the up position?

The lever is stuck in the up (reverse) position so I unhooked the cables on the right side and the lever and cables move as they should.

You are pulling out on the handle when you try to turn it, right?

If you have disconnected the cables and it is still stuck in reverse then something is internally hanging up. "Usually" rocking the bike will disengage reverse and restore the tranny to neutral. I'm at a loss at this time. Everything else, mechanical, associated with reverse is internal. ???
