Rebuild Carbs or Not ???

I just aquired Two 1993 SE Goldwings after my Dads passing :cry: They both have 11,150 miles and have been stored in a plastic bag like a loaf of bread for the last 14 years. I flushed out the fuel on the first one and put in 2 Gal. of fresh. Tried starting and the engine started running but would not accelerate, only to quit after about 20 seconds. The manual says float chamber should have been emptied for storage or jets would clog up. Fuel treatment was added B-4 storage. Is there ANY way to clean the carbs without R&R ?? Somebody.....Please Advise :? Thank You , Randy

If you are lucky and there is not much goo in the carbs it can be cleaned using a product like sea foam (Pour it in the tank and run the engine), but after 14 years I suspect it's a remove and clean job for the carbs!!

Well.....I have flushed the clutch fluid & am going to flush the brake fluid next. Anything else I am missing ?? I just want the motor to run at this point :| Thanks, "R"

oil and make sure u check your coolant too

Sorry for your lose, I would also suggest that you change the timing belts and look your tires over for dry rot 14 plus year old tires will need to be replaced good luck Hal

Don't forget to change the fuel filter.
Check the 'Sub air filter', it's the tiny thin foam filter that deteriorates over time and is always forgotten during maintenance.

Actually there are two. One on the right and one on the left under the false tank side covers.

I was going to ask about the "Sub Filter" also. Going out to get one at the Honda this morning along with some "Sea Foam". I'll keep everyone post on the results. Thanks All, Soon I'll be riding & Dad will be my Co-Pilot.
OH....Took my Written motorcycle test yesterday...Failed :-(. I will read the safety manual to my son as his bed time story :-).

Thank You :( . I checked the tires and they look like new. My dad had put those moisture bags in the cucoon B-4 storage.The timing belts ??? Never would have thought to check them. Thank You, I'll look into it :)

Gary,
Sea Foam seems to have done the trick :D. After about 2 minutes of idling with fresh gas.....it reved right up and is running as smooth as brand new. Gary....Your suggestion paid off & I am a happy camper. THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU. Now.....I hope I get the same results with the other bike :| . Glad to hear it helped.. As mentioned, it would be a very wise move to replace the timing belts after 14 years of storage, if they break you have a very expensive repair bill on your hand. The belts cannot be checked, you just have to replace them. Do not use Honda belts as they cost a fortune, if you do a search on this web site there are many links with the part numbers for the belts from Napa, etc that are much much cheaper and just as good as the Honda part.

Motorcycles are supposed to be expensive. .. .. . well supposed to be. BUT that's why we're all here helping each other save a few BUCKEROOS.

Speaking of saving moolah, How's your oil taste? (read below)

I had a 1977 XS1100 with ONLY 79,000 miles. She only needed 3 oil changes and one filter. Filter was still clean, but it was brittle. (she got caught in a garage fire, :( 'sniff' RIP)

Know its new taste and be loyal, you'll know when to change that oil.
Taste testing as the miles flow, souring as that acid grows.
And don't flirt with dirt or darkened oil, all the faster your engine will spoil.

Hi, I wanted to chime in here... I am actually starting to hear a little "whine" from my timing belts on my 96', so I ordered Gates belts today off of Ebay for $75 including shipping. I've ordered from this guy before a few years ago when I bought my belts for my 82' Aspy - very good belts, better then the Honda OEMs and a lot cheaper.
