Head Gasket???

Postby Jeff Lambert » Thu May 05, 2011 7:16 pm

My 1995 Goldwing runs fine and the heat gauge is also fine when I am travelling. However, when I stop and the bike is sitting and idling, the heat gauge goes up to about 1/2. I also smell antifreeze, but do not have any dripping on my garage floor. When I start it there is a white exhaust coming from the right pipe that dissipates after it has run a few minutes. Do I have a bad head gasket and how much is this going to cost to get fixed if it is the problem?

I would suggest that yes, you have a head gasket leak. Check your oil for coolant and your coolant for oil. Smell the of white smoke. It will smell like antifreeze if it is. If you have the tools you can do this yourself. Not sure of what it might cost at a shop. But lots of $$$$$$$. I can give you a link to an online manual if you need it.

Here are the steps just to give you an idea what is involved.
This doesn't cover removal of plastic faring parts.

Cylinder Head Removal
Drain the coolant
Remove the following:
timing belt and driven pulley
cylinder head cover, camshaft holder, and camshaft
exhaust pipe
spark plug wires
Support the intake manifold with bungee cords as shown
and remove the intake manifold mounting bolts and gasket.
Remove the following:
pulse secondary air injection pipes
cylinder head bolts
cylinder head

The first thing to do is look at your coolant reservoir. If it's down, or if the level goes down over time, then the coolant is going somewhere - and if it's not leaking out, chances are it's going into the engine via a bad head gasket. The white smoke is also an indicator of where it's going.

I talked with a Honda mechanic and he said "Even a half assed mechanic wouldn't replace the head gasket himself" to which I said "I'm not even a half assed mechanic, more like a dumb ass mechanic!" Man, I don't know if I have the confidence to do a job like this myself.

I work in electronics,I would also tell you not to fix it yourself, not because you are not able, but because I will make a bunch of money if you beg me to do it for you. There is no magic or pixi dust involved, just straight forward instructions.lefty loosey, righty tighty.

Anyone know where I can find a good online manual?
