Postby trikerider57 » Fri May 13, 2011 6:45 pm

My 98se trike died on me yesterday. The radio and clock started flashing then it died would not turn over disconnected the negitive on battery waited for about twenty min. or so hooked backed up it started and got me home.Put a tester on alt. it showed 11.5 also at Battery.Charged the battery over night 12.5 volts in the morning started it up only had 11.5 volts at alt. battery also fell back down to 11.5. Ran it for 5 to ten min. alt. jumped up to 13.9to 14.1 volts battery read 12.9 to 13.1 is this a sign the alt. is going.

I would lean towards a bad cell in the battery, Or the voltage regulator not functioning correctly,Or corroded connections at one or the other. The alternators usually last a very long time on these bikes.

You have an alternator with an internal regulator rectifier and brushes.
Worn brushes and a glazed sliprings can cause intermittent charging as can the regulator.
I don't know where you can buy these components individually though. ANYONE?
Brushes can be matched at your local auto electrical shop.
But first check all related positive and excite wiring connections.
The only thing you can inspect visually are the brushes once you have removed and dismantled the alternator.
If it was that easy everyone would be doing it!

I just read your post again, is there a 1v drop between the alt terminal and the batt terminal? if so you have a poor connection on the heavy 12v wire between them.

Thanks for the reply whatastate. We have a shop in town thats real good and reasonable that rebuilds altertors,so I took it out of the bike and brought it to them. they will call and let me know whats wrong with it if any thing before they repair it.It wasn't that hard to remove figured good place to start and I'll go from there.
