cam belt change

Postby cadwellmarkymark » Wed May 25, 2011 5:27 am

Hi all :D
I was talking to a honda dealer yesterday over the phone about a gl1500 that he had taken in on a part ex,
and when i asked about previous history and the like, it turn out that i did not have much in the way of servicing!!!
hi also mentioned that the cam belts, according to the manual did not need to be changed until until the bike had done
100,000 miles :? .
Surely this cannot be right.......ps this paticulur bike has done 19500 miles.

You didn't say what year this bike is. Age is just as or more important than mileage, especially low mileage. This bike has sat for long periods if it only has 19k miles. 100k is the recommended period but if I were you I would change the belts.

Timing belts are cheaper than engine work. I'd change them to have peace of mind every time i go out for a ride. I have a 1993 GL1500A and they were changed two years ago with 58,000+ miles on the bike. One belt was starting to separate :o .

I changed the belts on my 89 today, just under 73k. Tag on inside of cover was from 2000 service. Belts look to be the original Honda and while there was not a scratch or crack on either one the tensioners were loose enough to easily rotate with 2 fingers. Not as flexable as the new ones but the marks were dead on. Would not have done the repair except for needing to fix a cracked vacume line and swap plugs. Ready for some 500 mile days now.

I bought a 1999 1500 Wing a few weeks ago, with 41k miles on it, before I rode it I changed the belts, I'm sure I've read somewhere change them every 8 years, certainly wouldnt want to go 100k miles.
