Radio volume muted

Postby Gumby17 » Thu May 26, 2011 7:28 pm

I purchased a '94 Aspencade with a J&M CB-2003 with GL-15 kit installed. The FM radio works fine until power is applied to the CB and then the radio volume is muted to about 1/4 volume. The previous owner installed a power switch so the FM radio can be used normally when the CB power is turned off. I've checked wiring and all is proper. The CB works fine. The operation is the same through the speakers or headsets. Any ideas?

After some testing I found the mute signal from the CB was floating high, causing the FM radio to mute. I cut the mute signal wire in a way I could reconnect later and all works great, except the CB doesn't cause the radio to mute when someone is talking. There is probably a way to install a resistor to pull the mute signal down but I don't know what it would be.

I think your CB is working correctly, you need to adjust the squelch control.. On a CB you have a control (Called squelch) that controls when the CB mutes the radio, you usually adjust the squelch level so that when there is no one transmitting on the CB frequency the radio is not muted, then as soon as a signal is received by the CB, it mutes the radio and you hear the CB. I would reconnect the wire that you cut and then adjust the squelch control, just tune to a CB channel where no-one is talking and increase the squelch from minimum upwards until the radio is not muted, this will mean that empty channels will allow the radio to work and the minute someone talks on the CB it will overide the radio.. I hope that makes sense..

More than once I had the volume on the CB turned down, but not off - and was going crazy trying to figure out why my radio kept cutting out. It was transmissions being received on the CB, causing the radio to mute - but I couldn't hear the CB, because the volume was turned all the way down.
