GL1500I or GL1500A?

Postby crmoffet » Sun Jun 12, 2011 9:16 pm

How do I determine whether I have an Interstate or an Aspencade? I have a 1989 GL1500. I've been looking and I keep finding articles and data that suggest there was only a GL1500 in '89. I find other info that talks about an '89 Interstate and an '89 Aspencade. Very confusing, especially when looking at ordering parts. Even the state's DMV and my insurance company can't agree. Based on the VIN, the DMV says it's a GL1500, using the same number, the insurance company says it's an Interstate. Anyone know who to figure out who's right?

Thanks. I do have the compressor but the dash is only partially digital, the tack and speedo are dial. Also, there is no "Aspencade" on the bike anywhere.

Haven't gone there yet. Didn't figure it would be this difficult.

The 88s and 89s were only referred to as gl1500. There was no I, A or SE back then.

I have an 88 GL1500 which has the compressor and reverse. This designates it as a GL1500A. The digital dash means that you have your radio, clock display and shock psi reading in digital only which I also have.

I have a 1989 GL1500 Aspencade and there is an "A" in front of the last six digits in VIN#. Honda verified that the A was correct for Aspencade. All Aspencades had the Aspencade logo on left rear and Honda on the right.

The eleventh digit in the VIN is the plant code, not the model line.

Just goes to show the Honda dealer will say anything to look good.

I was told by some of those "in-the-know" type of people that if it came with Factory-Reverse, & C.B.Radio it was an "Aspencade." No C.B. or Reverse was an "Interstate!" I have an '88 with the C.B. & Reverse so I assume I have an "Aspencade" although there is no offical designation for those year models ('88-'89).
