94GL increases RPM's

Postby slotnick » Fri Jun 24, 2011 8:10 pm

I have a 94 GL with approx 160,000 miles on it. Recently i have noticed that as i go up through the gears, when I pull in the clutch and let off the throtle, the rpm's continue to climb for another 500rpm's or so. I though this was because the throtle was getting hung up, but all cables are free moving. I have made sure that i let off on throtle before the clutch ( I have put approx 100,000 miles on this bike in the past 6 years, so i confident about how to shift gears). This only happens while going through the gears and not down. I tried Sta-bil ethenol treatment and Seafoam carb cleaner without success. Power and MPG's are good. Any ideas?

Perhaps the carb slides are sticking or you might also need to sync the carbs.

I have never synched the carbs. Should this be done everyso often? I've also noticed that when i come to a stop it smells like the fuel is running rich by the smell of the exhaust. Are these symtoms of a synch problem too? Thanks for your help and suggestion.

Not sure how often you should sync the carbs but I also have a 99 Kawasaki Concours and it's doing the same thing your GL is doing and it's a problem from just needing a sync up and adjust on carbs.

A sync should be done if you have never done one. Check your plugs to see if it is running rich.

I checked the plugs. They did not appear to be running rich and they seemed to be consitant on color and burn pattern. I have a slight loping after the bike is warmed up. Not much, but it increases by 2-3 hundred rpms. This is sounding more and more like a carb adjustment issue. I'll make an appointment next week. Thanks for the help guys. Safe riding to all!
