Need Drive Shaft For Trike on GL1500

Postby Cat M » Mon Jun 27, 2011 11:51 pm

While out riding on a hot sunny day, geared down and received a very ugly noise and knew it wasn't good. Right away pulled into side road in shade as I had a sick feeling I would need rescue. First thought shut her down, calm down and then troubleshoot damage. She started up like a gem as usual no warning lights, had the brake on the whole time as I was at a slight incline. Put her in first, clutch not engaging, still need brake, go through all five gears, everything to include reverse was GONE. Rolled her to curb called fellow rider with trailer, whew bike very heavy to push! Got her back in the garage pulled all side panels and seat, no leaks, could see diff felt around and I have a hanging drive shaft and a sick feeling. Front of the shaft fine going into trans, both U joints look fine but the rear end of shaft was broken on the tip and spring still intact. My problem is I have no clue what type of Trike kit is on the bike so not sure how to go about getting a replacement shaft. I've attached pictures if anyone could give me some feedback on how to find this part (other than acting like a helpless female walking into somewhere with this broken part) or where to begin I would appreciate it.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Your GL1500 has a Motortrike conversion.
I'm going to pass a gentleman's name on to you Gary 1-800-591-6610 or send him an e-mail Lonestartrikes@aol.com he is currently running a maintenance program that is visiting a multitude of states for trike service and he could help you.
You could also contact Motortrike for assistance www.motortrike.com or 1-800-908-7453 or (903) 842-3094.
I'm sure either one will help you out.

Thank you for reply. Just found out today to look at the disc in the center of back wheel to determine trike kit and it had American Racing. I was told it was a earlier Motortrike kit and that it was machined and looking at a price around 175.00 for just the shaft. I will run it by Gary and see what he thinks feel a little better but seems high for just the shaft?

Gary will be making the trike maintenance tour in July and Tennessee is included in it. Give him a call or send an e-mail and set up an appointment.
