Major fuel leak

Postby cortezny » Fri Oct 30, 2009 11:50 pm

I recently got a 1989 GL1500 Goldwing. The bike has sat for two years with fuel in the tank and the fuel pump was shot. I replaced the fuel, fuel pump and filter. Got the bike started but fuel ran onto the ground from a hose under the motor. Any thoughts on what has caused this and how to fix it.

First guess without looking at anything would be a stuck carburetor float.

I'm a bit of a novice in this area. Is this a major repair?

Have you worked with carburetors before? It can be as simple as freeing the float. You might also want to dump a can of Seafoam into your tank and see if it might unstick what could be stuck. It's a simple fix (if that's the problem).

A little work with carbs. I'll try the seamfoam. I put some additive into the tank with the new gas but I shut it off when gas came pouring out of the breather tube.
