on a 1997, is there wires already behind the hole to install a cigarette lighter to, or is there a better way to power up a gps device

I just put a 12V cig. lighter receptacle on mine, a '96, for an FM transmitter for my mp3 player. I went directly to the battery for two reasons, I didn't want to have to change reprogram my transmitter every time I started it up as it resets to a default channel when the power is removed and I plan on using it for my maintainer. I used a fused 14ga 2 conductor wire one to the - and one to the + directly on the battery. Start to finish it took all of an hour or so.....Mike

I install my power plug inside the left pocket up in the front part. I also ran a Hot wire straight to the battery. It stays covered up and out of the weather, and with the snap cover it works really good plugging in my GPS or cell phone charger.

Installed lighter in the front of the left pocket with wiring direct to battery. Also, wired a cassette adapter to the pocket to use MP3 player.

On my 96 I just ran wires from the fuse block accessory terminal into the left fairing pocket and installed the lighter socket in there to keep it out of the weather. It works fine.

I did the same, but put one in both pockets in the fairing.

Did you thread the wire through the shelter or remove it?

If you run directly to the battery, you need to make sure that you put a fuse right before the battery connection.
If you run to the accessory block, you should be fine as it is already fused.
